  IC vs. petersons
Posted by: mnsimons - 12-29-2007, 10:15 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

I'm taking the CLEP biology on Monday, and have been studying a lot! Thanks to everyone on here for tips and resource ideas! I have read Biology Smart by Deborah Guest (I recommend this if you're like me and have a very hard time with science), written flashcards, read most of a college biology textbook, and have used IC. I have actually found, though, that I don't do well when "tesing" myself with the IC subject flashcards. I find the wording to be tough and there to be a lot of vocab I haven't run across in anything else I've read. Does anyone else find this to be true? Maybe not all subject are like that. I'm not very good with fill-in-the-blank, either. But perhaps the idea is not so much to know the right answer but to learn the reasons why an answer is wrong or right. I don't know - I am new at this.

I guess it boils down to this - I passed my first Petersons practice test with a 54. I plan to take the other two tonight & tomorrow. Even though when using IC I feel not prepared, would it be anyone's opinion that even with that, if I pass the petersons, I can be confident to pass the CLEP? I am basically against a deadline such that if I don't pass this exam, time's run out for me to earn by BA without having to go back and re-do a bunch of new classes they've added to the catalog. So it's an all-or-nothing situation for me and I'm so nervous!!

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Any other resources I can access (in the next day) to use?

  I am done.
Posted by: soltran - 12-29-2007, 02:00 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (13)

G'day,

I am done.

I didn’t take the quickest route or the cheapest but I am finished. I applied to Excelsior on December 18 last year and enrolled in the BS - Operations Management on the 21st. I started without any credits, spent about $10,000 and submitted my final assignment on December 16 and received my grade on the 27th. My grade for the last course wasn’t good but it was enough to finish the degree and give me an overall GPA of 3.72.

I’d like to thank all the members of InstantCert for sharing their experiences. It was a great help in preparing for exams and provided the inspiration I needed when motivation was low.

I would like to wish everyone all the best in their endeavors.

Regards

  ACE's upcoming CLEP review
Posted by: gus - 12-29-2007, 12:44 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I was browsing ACE's website for reference on Penn Foster courses and noticed a link for upcoming reviews which stated that Collegeboard (CLEP) is up for review on 1/11/2008:

ACE | CREDIT Programs Upcoming Reviews

Is this just routine or do you guys think they will be offering letter grading again?

  Penn Foster questions
Posted by: gus - 12-29-2007, 12:35 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I was going to take the following subjects in the form of exams (CLEP/DSST/ECE):
College Algebra
Princples of Statistics
Principles of Finance
College Writing

I'm wondering if I should go with Penn Foster instead and would like to weigh the pros and cons. I'd appreciate any feedback on the following questions:

1. How long would the equivalent courses take and would it be too much to take them all concurrently?

2. I was looking at the ACE website for credit recommendations, all of these subjects seem to be 3 credits worth, any one can confirm? I was also unable to find out if these courses would be letter graded at Excelsior?

3. Are there any drawbacks, taking these courses instead of CLEP/DSST/ECE exams, like for example being all lower level - would that be a problem for admissions into a graduate program?

I've read in one of the threads that Excelsior will take the lower level credit for the core subjects, but I'm not sure if this will affect admissions into graduate schools.

My apologies if these issues have been raised before.

  I Bombed One!

I just had my first major setback since starting to take DSST/CLEP exams. I was scheduled to take Principles of Management yesterday at 1:30. Well 45 minutes into the exam I had an emergency come up at work (I am an Infantry soldier serving in Iraq, so by work I mean I had to go fight a war). I quickly marked the remaining answers as all C's. Did I mention that I was only on #55 out of 100? Anyway, I'm gonna take a couple weeks to collect myself and thoroughly prepare for my next exam. Has anyone else had any bad luck like this while testing?

  Military Transcript
Posted by: traylorkenneth - 12-29-2007, 12:24 PM - Forum: Military Discussion - Replies (10)

Does anybody have any insight as to which school is the friendliest with AARTS transcripts? (AARTS is the database used to get credit for Army training) I want to get the max credits possible for my military experience. I know I can always apply at several schools and see who gives me the best results... but I just thought I could save some time if somebody has already been through this. Thanks for everybody's help... you guys are great! Smile

  Statistcs Idoits/For Dummies/Dummies Workbook

From anyone else experience which of
The three would give you a good orientation to deeper study of statistics?
I bought the workbook. It is interesting well written. My question...is the material
covered relevant to the tests for statistics? It seems Statistics is the
Biggest hurdle at Excelsior as it is a must
Or college Algebra. Beyond that you can
Pretty we'll choose subjects according to
Your need and ability

  Ready for Biology? Opinions/Advice Please
Posted by: C041348 - 12-28-2007, 11:22 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello, I just wanted to ask the board their opinion on how ready you think I am for the biology CLEP test. To give you some quick history, I used instacert and the REA study guide along with the official CLEP study guide practice test as well as wikepedia to help fill in the blanks to get ready for the psychology CLEP test and scored a 68 (need at least a 55) for my school.

So I then proceeded to use this same test prep material to prepare for the Biology CLEP test and have been studying for 4 weeks. I felt pretty good about the material and then I came across the “Peterson Practice Tests” to use as well. After taking 2 of them today... Much to my surprise, I scored a 55% and 53% on them. I felt that these were the most difficult practice tests I have come across so far... I was doing some other research on this and came across other board members feeling this as well. So I just wanted to ask the board in general if anyone thinks I am in serious trouble at not getting at least a 55 on the Biology CLEP and I have planned to take in Wed. and use the rest of my time from now until then to further prepare.

It would be very helpful if I could get feedback on how to further prepare for the exam from people that have already taken and passed the Biology CLEP if possible... Thanks in advanced for your input!

Should I just apply to both TESC and Excelsior?
Posted by: killerkitty - 12-28-2007, 04:28 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (5)

Hi all Smile

I'm having a hard time figuring out what to do, so why not ask the experts right?? hilarious

I have some random credit/learning experiences that I'm hoping might atleast get me SOME credits, but since I can't tell for sure, should I just apply to both TESC and Excelsior and see which school awards more credit?

I am a certified EMT, completed the EMT course in 2001. I got my certification.
After that I completed the EMT-Paramedic course in 2003. Never got certified as a Paramedic.

I have 51 credits at a Court Reporting school here in Pittsburgh. Some are GenEd, like English 1 and 2, Literature, Legal Term, Intro to Computers, and then the rest are Court Reporting class hours. It's called the Academy of Court Reporting, I know it's accredited but not sure if the type of accreditation is accepted.

Hehe and I also have 20 FEMA credits. If I do go with TESC I won't have transfer them from raw form to get the credit for them (right?) but if I go with Excelsior I would have to have them transcribed by FCC first for $1200. The money isn't a huge deal, I just want to go with the school that will award me more credit.

Who do you think would give me more credit? Do I basically have to apply to both places in order to find out for sure? Nothing would make me happier than actually receiving credit for my 2 years in Court Reporting school. I never did become a court reporter, I couldn't stand it!!!

Oh, and what about Charter Oak? Never even thought of that......

thanks all!!!!

The passing percentage of clep tests
Posted by: Shadowless - 12-28-2007, 02:44 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I did some research and found the passing rate for some clep and dante tests. My question is, quite a few clep tests are missing there passing rates. I believe a few are Micro and Macro ecomonics to name a few. Has anyone else noticed this or looked into this?
