  Business Degree
Posted by: johnysc430 - 02-15-2008, 05:15 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I applied to EC for the BS in Liberal Arts

Because I want to keep my GPA high so I can take the LSAT in Sept and apply to Law School.

After that I would like to get a business degree or some type of degree in finance.

What would I have to do.

What tests could I take?

What are some of my options?

  AWESOME website

When studying various exams, you'll encounter legal cases that impact the subject. I found an awesome free website that even includes study material. I used it specifically for the Miranda case, and it is so easy to use I just had to share. Written in easy to understand language and better than wikipedia for this. This website has all the supreme court landmark cases:

  Second Degree - School Swap?
Posted by: GettinMyBA - 02-15-2008, 08:18 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (18)

Am I making any sense here? All assistance is appreciated:

At the end of March, I expect to be fully qualified and will submit my graduation application to TESC (currently enrolled) for my BA in Liberal Studies. While happy to finally be at this point, something occurred to me recently.... my original intent, because of my current career stage and the fact that I'm hitting 40 ys old this year, was to just go for any degree. It was fine that my degree would be in Lib Studies - just wanted to get finished as quickly as possible. Tables have turned - I've become very dedicated and almost "addicted" to this, and I think maybe a BS with a specialty would be more beneficial.

Now, I still think (since I'm only a few weeks away from eligibility) that I should still apply for my BA, but as I understand it - for me to get an additional degree (BS in something), I have at least 30 credits that I need at TESC. Yesterday I called Excelsior and they said that if I have my BA from TESC, I will need at least 30 credits there also. But then I realized something.... I told the woman from Excelsior "Oh, wait.... I actually don't have a degree from TESC (yet) - all I have is a (big) pile of credits". Her answer was interesting... she said "Well, I guess whether you have a degree or not is not my business, is it?! If you file an Excelsior application with a (big) pile of credits, we will evaluate it as such - it's not a degree - it's a large number of credits." She told me to make sure I get a certified copy of my DD214 and make sure CELP & DANTES send transcripts.

So, did I find a loophole? Is this the smart thing to do? Did I just happen into this at the most opportunistic time? Sounds to me like I will get my BA from TESC and my BS from Excelsior and will have to do less than the 30 credits I was originally told. In fact, after that funky writing class (the Excelsior mandatory thing - whatever it is), I think I can actually test out of the rest of my BS(?????) Any idea if the same thing would be the case if I called U of Phoenix?

All experience with this is truly appreciated!

  Contemporary Western Europe since 1945

Does anyone have any info on the DSST Contemporary Western Europe since 1945. I searched the forum, but the last post I saw about it was amost two years ago. I might take this test in a month or so(its free) so I might just end up being the guinea pig.

How long are your study sessions on average?

I'm curious to know how long most of you study for at one sitting. I see a lot of "I studied for a week and passed" and I'm wondering what that equates to timewise.

Thanks! Smile

Question about Ed.S degrees? Cinderly or other future teachers?
Posted by: PatsGirl1 - 02-14-2008, 06:54 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Is anyone interested in doing an Educational Specialist degree?

I want to adjunct/CC teach and know I need an M.A. (which I'll be going on to get), but what I also wondered is- are any of the further degrees necessary to enhance your chances? An Ed.S, 2nd M.A. in Adult Ed, Cert. in CC teaching, etc.
I know PhD is required for tenure track at University level, but I'm not aiming that high any time in the foreseeable future. My chances of making it in Colonial and Post-Colonial American Literature without prior publishing are slim to none at best, and I'd actually prefer CC/Adjunct teaching anyway.
I know with an Ed.S. it is usually considered (from what I've heard) a Specialist degree mostly for the HS/Middle school teachers wanting to go into Admin, so would it be unusual for college? Would a 2nd M.A. specifically in Adult Education be better or redundant?
I have a call in to my local Community College Dean to ask him what they would prefer (which is, in a perfect world, the school I would want to teach in when my husband gets out of the military), but I wanted to ask the DL vets here first. Wink
I'm looking for anything to make me stand out- they have so many Liberal Arts Adjunct applications, I want a degree/cert/something to put me to the top of the list.

  Code for CLEP & DSST?
Posted by: Paul - 02-14-2008, 01:19 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

Is there a code to use on the CLEP & DSST forms to have the test results sent to CLEP & DSST instead of a college if you are taking all or most of your exams but will enroll in an college like TESC closer to completing the degree? Also, am I correct in thinking we are able to request just the exams we want released sent to the college?

  TESC Degree Help!!!
Posted by: mlwilliamsiv - 02-14-2008, 12:06 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (3)

Hello everyone.

I am looking into getting my B.S.B.A at TESC. I am trying to make a list of CLEP/DSST exams I can take based on their credit distribution requirements.

The have on their 2007/2008 catalog the following:

Humanities 12 credits
1. Managerial or Business Communications (3)
2. Other Humanities (9)

-must include at least two subject areas.

My question is what CLEP/DSST exams can I take for the Managerial/Business Comm Requirement. And two, is there anyway I can meet the 12 credit requirement with just 2 tests instead of 3?

I haven't decided which 6 credit Humanities CLEP I want to take yet, but based on the advice people have provided on here, it sounds like A & I Lit would be the best choice. That means I still need 6 more credits. But if its mandatory that I take Man or Bus. Communications (which is only 3 credits), I still need another 3 credit CLEP/DSST. What should I do?

I also need help with the Natural Science/Math portion too.

The have on their 2007/2008 catalog the following:

Natural Sciences and Mathematics 9 credits
1. Precalculus Math or Quantitative Business Analysis (3)
2. Principles of Statistics (3)
3. Other Natural Sciences (3)
-must include at least two subject areas-

Now I know their is a Statistics DSST, so thats not a problem. I couldn't tell on the website if they count College Algebra CLEP as the math requirement or if it definitely has to be precal. Is quantitative business analysis easier than precal or about the same? And last...what should I take for the last 3 credits in this category? Mind you I'm not a huge science fan so make sure you pick the easiest natural sciences you can!!

Sorry for the long post here guys, but I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a solid game plan here. Thanks alot...you guys are great and I love this site!!!!!

From a loyal degree seeker,

Marshall

  Dual or Multiple Degrees??
Posted by: HawkGuy - 02-13-2008, 07:06 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (6)

Say I want to earn a BA in Psych from TESC (which I do), but also want to earn another Bachelors degree in another area, ie: Business, Philosophy, Religion, Criminal Justice, History, whatever. Could I transfer all my credits from TESC to Excelsior or Charter Oak and get the second degree? Or just get the second degree from TESC?

TESC says that a student must earn "30 additional credits for a second baccalaureate degree beyond the date all prior degrees were completed." Ok, that's all well and good, but what if I just do all my tests before I graduate?

It just makes no sense that I'd have to graduate first, then go back and take 30 more credits. So if any of you has any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!!!
