Crossroads Decision: WGU MSITM or MSCSIA Grad Degree
Posted by: OgaLearner - 08-23-2024, 08:33 PM - Forum: WGU - Western Governors University Discussion - Replies (7)

Great Degree hacking folks, good evening,

Just found out about this forum only today while trying to make up my mind between taking WGU's MSITM program or the MSCSIA one.(Found out about WGU's existence & their unconventional and cool CBE-style only just this past Tuesday night and completed my application package within 2days - fastest school program I have ever enrolled for in my life that didnt require refence letters, or annoying statement of intent letters as if me deciding to fork our cash to want to enroll in a masters voluntarily isn't enough intent that you truly want it but traditional universities are still stuck in the stone ages. I was completing my application while still conducting research to find out how accredited and real WGU was, and if the stories of the graduates are really true)

I have a BSc. in Computer Engineeing, with a decade of work experience in Tech, software, consulting, and telecoms. I currently lead projects as a Technical Project Manager for a Cybersecurity Operations team for over 1yr now.

I have had my sights set on doing my Masters for close to a decade now but either cost or the thought of simply maxing out my bachelors degree for as long as possible to see how far it'd take me in my career before I decide it's usefulness is done, and it's the right time to for me to get a Masters, is what has pushed me away from taking the next step all this while.

I am so rebellious that I've never taken an IT cert in my entire Tech career as I've never liked the concept of certifications when my work experience could vouch for me knowing how to get the job done well.

I'm in a humble spot right now and with my current foray into Cyber by nature of my job; managing all sorts of Cybersecurity projects and initiatives, and I am really evaluating if it's smart for me to pigeonhole myself into the Cybersecurity Tech domain and specialize in it and continue building myself as a Tech leader with a good Cybersecurity grounding, or if I should keep my options a bit more open and chart the course of the IT Management Masters @ WGU which I see has a project management course(even though the cert it offers is the CAPM, which is lesser than the actual offical PMP cert which is a lot more regarded in my role.)

Being that cost is one of the factors I consider, and i have zero Cybersecurity, project management or IT certifications and have done pretty fine for the over a decade in my career working for various enterprise firm across the world,

I don't want to spend the full 2yrs(4 terms) I would need if I intend on taking all the WGU required courses and passing the certs while taking the Cyber degree in WGU, and I can't speedhack it as I don't have any courses or Cyber certs that I can transfer over to speed up my completion time

My question would be, I would like to hear from mid-level, senior-level tech management individuals who have taken either or both programs and can help guide me on which program might make more sense long-term and how I can go about completing whichever masters degree I pick in 2 terms(max).

I can commit 10-15hrs/week to study and do the classes during the work week once I close from work and make 8- during the weekend. But I'd appreciate perspectives to look at this from and advice.

I saw WGU advertise e a $5,000 scholarship if I follow the Cybersecurity masters but I haven't read more t into it, and if the same scholarship applies to the MS IT Management.

NB: Apologies for the long first post, but I like to add color and context to my questions, so it paints the full picture of my scenario. Smile

  Research Sources for Writing Assignments
Posted by: bradonomics - 08-23-2024, 07:14 AM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (4)

I am having difficulty finding sources. I assumed that university students had access to all academic journals so this could be that I don't know how to search.

On mycourses.tesu.edu under Research I see EBSCOhost and ProQuest. When I search for the articles I need I can only find the abstract.

I found another thread where rachel83az said there were many places TESU students should have access. Sagepub is listed there but I can't access the articles (e.g. this one).

Is there a tutorial on accessing academic articles? Am I wrong about students being able to access all articles?

Seeking Advice on Pursuing an MBA for Career Advancement in the USA
Posted by: leop25 - 08-23-2024, 03:39 AM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (4)

Hello everyone,

I'm seeking advice on which degree I should pursue to enhance my qualifications and prepare for a potential move to the USA in the next 1-2 years. I want to ensure that the program I choose aligns with my professional goals and personal commitments. Below, I've filled out a template with my current situation and preferences. I would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations you might have. Thank you in advance for your help!

**Your Location:** Germany
**Your Age:** 31 years
**What kind of degree do you want?:** MBA
**Current Regional Accredited Credits:** Bachelor of Arts from a German university
**Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits:** None
**Any certifications or military experience?:** None
**Budget:** Preferably under $10,000
**Commitments:** Family and full-time work at a large European bank in the HR IT sector
**Dedicated time to study:** Limited due to full-time work and family commitments
**Timeline:** Completion in 1-2 years

**Additional Information:** I plan to move to the USA in the next 1-2 years and want to further qualify myself in the meantime to build a network in the USA and increase my professional value. I am open to programs that offer flexible learning formats, such as online courses. I am considering the Executive MBA program from Valar/Quantic, where I would receive a scholarship that reduces costs by about 60%. However, I am uncertain because it is not fully accredited in the USA. I am looking for a cost-effective program that can be completed quickly and fits within my budget constraints.

Sophia Public Speaking for TESU Oral Communication Gen Ed
Posted by: wow - 08-22-2024, 09:24 PM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (2)

Was on the Sophia subReddit today and saw an offhand comment in a months-old post that seemed to imply TESU no longer takes Sophia Public Speaking for the Oral Communication requirement. Is this accurate? If so, let me know and I'll update the Wiki.
If it's not, then it's just more evidence not to believe everything posted on Reddit ... The person was also hawking Study.com codes so grain of salt.

LIB4950 Capstone - Oral Presentation question
Posted by: MLFLY6 - 08-22-2024, 08:11 PM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (3)

Greetings,

Currently doing my Liberal Arts Capstone and I'm getting up to the Oral presentation portion. Anyone that completed it. Did you stay in the 8-10 minute timeframe? I have timed myself and I am currently in the 12-15 minutes. I feel like if I cut more out that I will not meet the objective.

Also when you had to submit it at the end. Did you have to submit the powerpoint presentation or just the recording?

Thanks!

I want to start by expressing my gratitude to this community for everything. When I was 23 years old, serving in the Air Force and just coasting along, I stumbled upon this forum in early 2023. That discovery changed my life. Since then, I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and as of this week, I’ve completed my Master of Business Administration from Eastern University. I never imagined I’d attend college, which is why I joined the Air Force after high school while my friends went off to university. Ironically, I now have a higher education than most of my peers, and I’m 100% debt-free thanks to the GI Bill. For anyone in a similar situation to where I was before finding this forum, just know that you can do it too.

  Plans moving forward
Posted by: tdat314 - 08-22-2024, 02:25 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

Hey Everyone,

I started looking into the methods on this forum earlier this year and through the info here and other's help, I finished not only the pierpont BOG degree, but have also finished a session at UMPI which should award me a BAS with minors in MIS, PM, and BA.

I asked this question on the discord, but wanted to test the waters here as well to see other opinions.

As it stands, I am very strongly considering continuing at UMPI for the MAOL.

During my bachelor coursework, I finished 2 of the 4 available exemption classes for the MAOL. I am aware that only 3 can be used for the masters program.

I was thinking about taking another session and finishing the last usable MAOL class in the undergrad courses and also using that time to try for another degree program, such as history or political science. The reasoning is that finishing the final MAOL undergrad class would relieve some pressure from me for the graduate classes and might allow me to finish the MAOL in one session, like my bachelors. The cost of two sessions of graduate classes is more than taking another undergrad session, finishing the last exemption class, and finishing another bachelors in an unrelated area.

The questions comes down to does anything think it's worth it to do this? Or should I just go for the MAOL right away?

Do WGU Credits Count as RA at TESU?
Posted by: latearrival - 08-22-2024, 11:37 AM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (3)

This might be a dumb question, but I graduated WGU (Cloud Computing) awhile back and I'm trying to transfer credit into TESU to get their BA in Computer Science.

When I went to WGU, I utilized Sophia/Study to get about 50-60 GenEd credits knocked out so that shows up on my WGU transcript. I then took 60 credits at WGU.

Going to TESU, I'm wondering if the classes I took and passed specifically at WGU (about 60 credits) count as RA or not?

And one more question, is https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ience_Plan still valid or out of date at all? I am using this as a reference for additional Sophia/Study courses I can take. I looked briefly at TESUs degree plan and on Sophia's transfer page and Study's transfer page, and the suggestions there do still look valid.

  FIRST TERM IN Excelsior !
Posted by: minhda - 08-22-2024, 11:18 AM - Forum: EU - Excelsior University Discussion - Replies (12)

Hello Everyone,
My name is Minh and I am from Viet Nam. I have been  credited with 102 transfer credits from my previous univeristy which means I have to complete  6 courses plus a 1 credit course that is also required for the degree. Those subjects are:

  • Cornerstone
  • Ethics
  • Information Literacy
  • Business Writing or Eng Composition II
  • Leadership
  • Project Management
  • Integrated Business and Management Assessment
I have read through and got no idea what is  about sophia and study.com to transfer the credits. Can anyone give me some explanations about that ? I am paying $1740 per course that is quite expensive for me and I had to pay by credit card. Does courses at Sophia or study are cheaper or something ?  Those courses I have to take above are require a lot of time to study and can we get any other resources to get all those assignments and final exam done easily ? What is the best and fastest way for me to get my degree ASAP by summer 2025  ?

My goal is just to get a business degree ASAP. What University should I apply for the fastest and cheapest way ? I am currently applying to Excelsior and paid for my first course for $1740. But they accept 102 credits which I only left 6 courses.
