I have just finished reviewing the sample questions on the CLEP ALGEBRA guide from CLEP and I am freaking out. I thought I was making some progress, but after seeing the kind of questions they ask, I am speechless.
It isn't just about understanding the concept but trying to decode what the heck they are even asking. How did you prepare for these kind of questions?
I am VERY bummed

I also struggled with the Algebra CLEP, so decided to take the ALEKS courses instead. I started way back with Pre-Algebra, and worked my way through Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and then College Algebra. While I didn't get credit for the first 2 courses, I did get 6 units for the other 2. Oh yeah, and I also only paid $20 total, I got through Pre-Algebra in 2 hours, Beg. Alg in 4 hours, Int Alg in about 10 hours, and College Alg in a couple of weeks. Each time I would pass 1 course (which I did to the full 100% because I knew I needed the info to work my way through the next course), the beginning Assessment for the next course would yield a pretty high score.
Now, there is also the Saylor course available for free. You can work your way through and then take the final exam. Once you pass that, take the proctored exam for $25.
Just my 2 cents, but if I don't think I can pass an exam, I look for another option. Sometimes, those options are even cheaper than the exam!!

Relationships are a lot like algebra. Did you ever look at your X and wonder Y?

I struggled with algebra a lot and had the same feeling as you as I studied for the CLEP. Eventually I failed the CLEP and tried it with Straighterline. I averaged a "C" with SL but then failed the final and the class. I found ALEKS to be the best resource for learning, understanding and eventually passing the class with a 78%. I highly recommend ALEKS for algebra. Mathway.com is a great calculator that will help you understand how equations can be solved. Good luck.

dfrecore did it right with ALEKS. I just finished mentoring a student through College Algebra. Although he had taken 2 semesters of Intermediate Algebra in CC 10 years ago, he had a complete math phobia. While it took him 280 hours to get to 80%, he is now the happiest "man of math" on earth and is chomping at the bit to begin Pre-Calc. and Stats. This quote from a forum post I can't recall really helped him: "Don't worry about the time any pursuit of knowledge takes for time will pass by all on its own, but true knowledge is timeless." With ALEKS you cannot fail.
