whats the most bankable degree for ba
#21
Businessweek just published their annual survey, but I misplaced the link. The top 10 was filled with various flavors of "Engineering". Economics has a rep as the most lucrative of the "easy" majors, and was the only non-Engineering major in the top 10. The helping fields other than nursing seem to want a master's at minimum. Psychology is the single most popular major by some accounts, which results in an oversupply, but it's a good degree to have if you have other skills. Business without a concentration is not very high on the list; MIS, Finance/Accounting and Operations Management are the stars there.

Of course, there's more to life than money (money's just real helpful in enjoying the 'more') and what you earn has more to do with the totality of what you bring to the job and your performance, but even a casual analysis suggests quantitative education is the key to salary growth both after graduation and later in career. Back to ALEKS for me...

Like others have mentioned, accounting, engineering and nursing are all very stable professions. Actuarial positions are also very lucrative and stable, but require a very high level of mathematical ability. Unfortunately, these are all difficult to finish completely on-line, but you can at least do accounting this way (although higher level accounting classes really suck to take on-line haha).

I'm all for following your dream though, just make sure you have a plan and have researched it to make sure it's actually doable. Good luck!
