guided study courses at TESC
#1
Has anyone taken any guided study courses at TESC? If so, how are the classes structured. What about workload?

I've taken a couple guided study courses with them. You usually have 1 assignment due per week and a proctored midterm and an unproctored final. Some of the courses I have taken had a project or research paper instead of a final exam. Unlike the online study courses the guided study courses do not require any interaction with your classmates.

I have taken one Guided study last year and I am taking an On line class now.

I found the GS class more enjoyable because it was more self learning and less interaction. There was a paper due every week a proctored mid term and a proctored final.

With the OL class a paper is due every other week, but I find the discussion forums take almost as much time. I also find reading some of the other post raise my blood pressure and trying to respond to some of the comments frustrating.

Most people say it is just a matter of learning style, if you are good with little to no proctor contact and you are disiplined enough to stay on pace guided study is good.

I'm taking 2 classes in Guided Study and 1 online class at TESC. Both are okay, however, I find online courses more time consuming because of the discussion boards but some may prefer that because I think as long as you put some effort into participating this can improve your GPA. However, I prefer the Guided Study as well because it allows me to just focus on the readings and assignments at hand.

So are the assignments that are due once a week research paper? Is it all done in APA style? Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I think it depends on the course. For example, I'm taking a Social Pschology 379 GS which you do have to write 1 paper a week APA style. However, my Computer Science course which is guided doesn't require papers but does require written assignments from the text as well as some programming assignments. I think it's all a matter of personal preference, however, if you don't want to be bogged down by discussion boards you might want to go with guided study. I prefer it as well.

I took Intro to Children's Lit in the Guided Study format, while taking two other English courses online. It was nice to have assignments due only on the Sunday of each week; however, in this particular GS course, the homework load DOUBLED after midterm week (twice as many essays to write). I don't know why...neither did my mentor.
