ethics in america
#1
Has anyone taken ethic in america, dsst? Any suggestions, using IC, official study guide and pass the test study guide. I heard this is a difficult test to take, also can anyone tell me the format? Multiple choice, scenarios, and essay???
Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

I took the ECE Ethics theory and practice exam but I understand it is close to or a little harder than the DSST. I think your best bet is to review the specific exam feedback area. That was quite helpful to me. I also highly recommend the Dr. Hinman lectures. There are also links in the specific exam feedback area to other podcasts and study sites. I used IC, Dr. Hinmans videos and some of the text review sites. I found the textbooks hard, boring reading so the videos helped a great deal. He uses real world examples that help to make it all make sense. This also allowed me to apply it to the scenarios questions. Good Luck!

Thanks for the post, where do I find the resources on specific exams you mention? Are they on this site or the DSST site? I am using IC for the first time, ethics is my last degree requirement to graduate Dec.
Thanks, Melanie

Melanie,

You must be a paid member of IC to access the specific exam feedback area. If you are, when you log in, you will see several topic boards. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see specific exam feedback listed as the last board link. I looked and the EC Ethics exam I took was upper level, but the DSST exam is lower level, so you should be fine with the IC flashcards and the specific exam feedback. If you are struggling with the theorists and their theories and how to apply them, I would highly recommend the Dr. Hinman videos and some of the podcasts if you want info on the go. Good luck!

Hi,
I took this exam yesterday and passed with a 436. This is hardest exam i have ever taken, the questions could have been wriiten better. The tools I used to pass this beast was the Book MORAL PHILOSOPHY by emmett barcalow 2nd edition I got my copy from the local library truely this is the only book needed. I did use the IC flashcards and scenarios they helped some. I also used flashcards from flashcardexchange.com. But the book is what put it together for me. All of the questions are multiple choice where I tested I had 99 questions and 1 essay I am enrolled in excelsior college did not need to do essay. Hopefully I have answered your questions you are welcome to contact me if you would like. Good luck!!

I took the test a few weeks ago on 7 days of study and passed it, but when I pressed the "are you sure" button I was certain I'd failed it. This test had nothing to do with ethics...it was a glorified philosophy test.

If you are serious about taking this test I recommend spending most of your time on the last 2-4 sets of flashcards on this site, which are indicative of the types of questions you'll see on the test. They are wordy and highly theoretical. I've passed 6 Dantes tests in the last 8 weeks and this one was by far the hardest. Know your philosophers, and be prepared for a headache!

It's true, Ethics in America is Philosophy 315, or something like. ACE rates this exam as upper-level (though Excelsior does not credit it that way); the test assumes a certain level of knowledge about ideas (mostly from the "Western" perspective) and the people who developed those ideas. The Barcalow book is probably all you need, but there are other resources that will do, and IC is pretty good. The test is easier with even a little extra study, such as with the encyclopedia, or the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

I found the questions completely understandable on my version; I think it's a matter of familiarity with the material. 7 days of study is really rapid, unless you have substantial background learning already.

I'm pretty sure mine was multiple-choice only.
