Hey, since I am decidedly NOT a business person, I'm looking for a good "first" exam for my son who is interested in business. He tried to study for stats last winter, and it was too hard. He is 14 and will be starting high school this fall, I thought he might be able to do a business exam as a summer school project. He has also started marketing for his new business this summer - mowing lawns- so it should be fun for him to get some hands on along with the theory. Any suggestions?

I suggest the Marketing CLEP. He can start with this standard deviants video (free). then the IC cards. Pretty easy stuff.

Even more basic and maybe even more fun would be intro to business. It was the funnest and easiest exam I ever took, I got a 77 on it.

I haven't taken Intro to Business, so I can't comment on that.
But I think Marketing or Management would be excellent places to start.
OR... DSST Principles of Supervision or Organizational Behavior. They are free business electives, but SUPER easy. I think I studied 2-3 hours for each of them. You can download a study guide for them, read through it once, answer the practices questions and take the test!

I agree with the other posters about the Intro to Business exam. Plus, if (oops, I mean when) he decides to take Marketing, Supervision, HR, etc., he'll already have a little understanding of those subjects.
Man, I wish I'd had that much initiative at 14. Or 20. Or 25. Or........

My vote is for marketing
As a first step I would have him do what any businessman starting off does. If he needs help then have him contact a geezer at SCORE
1) Formulate a business plan
2) Determine his fixed and variable costs - gas, mower wear and tear, trimmer
3) Formulate a budget
4) Set up pricing strategies - How many lawns can he cut in a week? If there is great demand for his services then how much will the market bare? Is he better off cutting 10 lawns at $20 a piece or 7 at $30 ? Does he want to differentiate himself from his competition by adding value added services like trimming etc...
5) Develop a marketing plan - Most important create urgency.... "I only have six slots available and they are going quickly, this morning I've already signed up three neighbors....you need to let me know right now before I move on to the next block. He can get away with it, he's 14" hilarious .

I would say Intro to Business or Intro to Marketing. They would both be do able. It might not even hurt to enroll him in a local CC to take a business class. Check who's teaching it and make sure they are someone you would not mind having a class with. We have some wonderful teacher at some of our local CC. We also have some not so wonderful teachers. Find out who is naughty or nice!

We are in the middle of this series of exams with my 15 year old. She took to Econ which has spilled into a whole list of business exams.
Intro to business includes Marketing, so I vote for Marketing. The Marketing REA should do for that one with the SD videos, then the free peterson's pdf file for Intro to Business.
In 6th grade my daughter "sold" Avon for a year under my tutelage. Each month she calculated her orders, balanced her check book, figured $$ collected for tax. Honestly, it was the best project we ever did. So if you can have him keep books on his lawn mowing business, it will go a long way. There is a curriculum called LIFE Prep and Larry Burkett's money management for teens -- it would be fun summer projects that would help him gain an understanding of the money/business world without being school-like.
If he has finished Algebra, also consider Business Math. I would suggest Business Math DeMystified. My daughter is a shopper, so this one is coming easy.
