advice on degree path
#1
Hello,

I have done some reading here after seeing a link shared from Reddit.

Please help me understand if I could get a Bachelor's degree. I have an Associate's degree in automotive from an accredited community college.
My youngest son is transferring from community college to a university this year, and this has sparked my interest in obtaining a degree.

Your Location: Texas, USA
Your Age: 46
What kind of degree do you want?: Bachelor's degree (I am open to any type)
Current Regional Accredited Credits:

San Jacinto College Pasadena,TX
A.A.S. Automotive Technology (Toyota option) completed in 1997

AUTO 1511 Automotive Technology  B (tested out of this class)

AUTO 1512 Automotive Electrical      B
AUTO 1513 Auto Engines A
AUTO 1517 Steering/Suspensions and Brakes B
PHED 1123 Weight Training A

AUTO 2511 Auto drive ability and diagnosis A
ENGL 1301 Comp 1 B
SPCH 1321 Business and professional speech B
TMTH 1313 College Math (Technical Math) A

PHED 1111 Bowling A

TTEN 1311 Automotive skills and pre-delivery A
TTEN 2411 Automotive transmission and transaxle A

ENGL 2311 Technical Report Writing C
SOCI 1301 Intro Sociology C
TTEN 2310 COOP work experience A
TTEN 2311 Climate control systems A
TTEN 2312 Toyota Brakes and Suspension A

ELEC 1310 Basic electricity A
TTEN 2310 COOP work experience A
TTEN 2313 Fuel injection and computer control A
TTEN 2412 Manual transmission and transaxle A

Totals   66 Attempt hours     71 passed hours     66 GPA hours     3.57 GPA

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits:

None

Any certifications or military experience? ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification ASE Master Automotive Technician since 1996. I also have alternative certification in Texas to teach automotive in public high school 9-12 (17 years experience in this field). I also have to take professional development classes in automotive or education each year (20-40 clock hours per year). Before I started teaching I worked in The automotive industry repairing cars and took several classes with Toyota.

Update: My main focus has been TAMUC. I have applied and sent my college transcript that I typed out above. Should I send ASE certification or professional development classes or toyota certification to them?

Budget: I'd like to go with an affordable option if possible.
Commitments: I currently work full time and can work on my studies part time or in the evenings/weekends.
Dedicated time to study: I can dedicate 20-30 hours per week.
Timeline: No set timeline.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: I do not know of anything available in my industry. There are very few people in education who do not have a Bachelor's.

@ltw900rr, Welcome to the board... So, you're a 77'er too and you've completed the template and last post addendum!  I also recommend the TAMUC BAAS with the same concentration as it will take the bulk of your credits in the 'professional' category and you'll just have to take the remaining general education and major with them!

Since you've applied, make sure to change into the BAAS OL concentration if you haven't already and get an evaluation.  If you can, paste/post an update with your evaluation (without your personal details), you can link us to your one/google drive if you have it as a PDF or picture, we can then comment on the required courses.

I would definitely recommend following the degree plan that LevelUP linked. The fewer classes you need to take at TAMUC, the quicker (and cheaper) your degree will be!
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Question on the Wiki - now that Sophia offers the scienes w/labs will TAMUC take those? The wiki has SDC only listed as recommended (for lab sciences). Or were those not listed because TAMUC don't require a lab science - although Sophia Biology is not listed even without lab?

TAMUC doesn't require a lab, just 6 science credits. They accepted my Sophia Biology and Chemistry classes for this requirement.

I'll update the wiki.

Thank you for the replies. I am in the process of obtaining my high school transcript. I wish they made it easier to get. My community college transcript was very easy to obtain through parchment. I will post details once everything is evaluated from TAMUC.

I hope that I can take any missing LL classes through sophia after TAMUC evaluates my community college courses.

Does TAMUC even still want your HS diploma even though you have an AAS? Some schools do, others don't care. Once you have a first degree, your HS diploma no longer matters to the second type of school. UMPI, for instance, no longer cares about your HS diploma if you have an Associate degree.

I have emailed TAMUC to ask, but I am also in the process of obtaining my HS transcript. It is not too far of a drive for me to pick up the transcript.

Obviously since you're in TX, you should consider TAMUC your first option - but if you find them at all difficult to deal with, your second choice should be UMPI. We know much more about it, and there are a LOT more degrees than TAMUC, including Business with different concentrations, English, History or PoliSci, CJ, and Psych - all in addition to the BLS with several options for concentrations.

I personally would only do TAMUC if I REALLY didn't care about the degree and price was a major issue - obviously the name recognition is important, but that's letting the tail wag the dog, as the degree is more important than most of these factors. If you need a business degree, or an English degree, or an IT degree, then TAMUC isn't going to cut it.
