(checking my map)
Yep, I was about 30 miles next door. Funny how people who did serve in places like that can respectfully have differing opinions, right?
Edit I should clarify. I do understand, Rugby, completely. When you are in it then it becomes hard to stomach anything that sounds even remotely like what you are doing is somehow not going to turn out well. I remember being pissed at things that never bothered me before then. Don't blame you at all for it.

Hello Rugbyman, (I really hope you will read this.)
I am a young tax payer and Iâd like to express my appreciation for your service. Though I may not sound like a âyoungâ tax payer, nevertheless I am.
It honors me to hear that you are not only serving your country, but also serving with the personal purpose of honoring your country and the people in it.
I have always looked up to soldiers, for these reasons, they are courageous, loyal, strong, trustworthy, patriotic etc. Like policemen and other civil servants I thought they were and wanted to protect their country and the people in it.
But my reasons for admiration of you all was actually proved for me, in what you said.
I assume that all those characteristics I mentioned are a part of every soldier. However I appreciate hearing it from you.
Thank you so very much for all you are doing and God Bless!

The reason we are here still, is because we knocked the Taliban out of power and destroyed what little infrastructure Afghanistan had. As the world's police and the greatest superpower in the world it is our moral obligation to set them up to try to prevent the Taliban from coming in and taking over as soon as we pull out.
Believe me, I'm not a loyal supporter of the war, but I am a Soldier who currently lives in Kandahar Afghanistan training Afghan Police. The fact is Afghanistan is making improvements, but the News Media does not care to cover positive things our military and the Afghan Government is accomplishing.
As for you saying your a tax payer, please don't play that card. There are over 4000 service members who have given more than a few dollars out of their paycheck for this war.

I just hope you're right and that the improvements and the positive things we are accomplishing last after we eventually do pull out. I'll be here again in 2014 to see for myself what shape the Afghan government will be as we start heading out.
Lets hope the Afghans learn to fish by themselves after more than 10 years of babysitting, instead of depending on others to give them the fish everyday. We'll see what happens.
One thing I found ironic this year was that we were supposed to downsize about 25% of our service members, and we did in our AO, but replaced every single one of them with civilian contractors.
Stay safe down in Kandahar!

I've read the Afgan government is rife with corruption, I predict if US ever leaves the government will collapse.

Yes, that is pretty much a guarantee. That was guaranteed before 9/11, and guaranteed before the Russians, and before the British, and hell, before Alexander.

Curious: Are the ANP as corrupt now as they were a few years ago? Back then they preyed on the local population almost as much as the Taliban. Where I was at one time there was a dispute between the local ANA and ANP commanders (I think ANP arrested an ANA soldier) that actually devolved into a shootout started by the ANP. ANP were lousy shots and paid the price.

Read James Michenor's "Caravans" to get an understanding of what and who you are dealing with in Afghanistan. These folks are tough, singleminded mountain people. I read Michenor's book back in the 80s before the Soviets moved in and tried to change things. I knew they would fail, just as many others had failed before them and just as we will fail to make a difference. The Afghans are just like the Vietnamese, they have a long history of being occupied and under the rule of others and just like the Vietnamese, the Afghans will outlast the latest incursion and return to their former ways.
I appreciate the work our military forces are doing over there, but its our leaders who are to blame for putting Americans where they are not wanted (and keeping them there). These leaders are sorely lacking in historical good sense - They should be reading Michenor's book to get a better understanding of the Afghan people and their leaders.
Thank you to all who are serving our very fine country in a most dangerous of places! Be well, stay safe, and may God bless you each and every day.
Happy Resurrection day!
