Why I’m Leaving New York City. More than half a million people left New York in 2022
#1
Clown World update.

People are waking up. One of the foreign language YouTubers that I follow went on a rant about how bad things have gotten in New York.

This is the first time I've ever heard him talk about politics, but it must have become impossible to ignore all the problems New York is going through with its incompetent woke leaders.

New York is currently experiencing:
  • High crime rates, with criminals seemingly having more rights than good citizens at this point.

  • High rent due to extensive housing regulations.

  • High taxes aimed at funding wasteful government spending.
More than half a million people left New York in 2022.

Denver is currently experiencing high rent due to corporations something - not my area of expertise - but I do know that there are practically zero housing regulations.  According to friends of mine who rent, it's practically impossible to get any inspection done for lack of liveability.   And people are still moving here!   Most of them are bad drivers and I wish they'd go away.

NYC is incredibly expensive, that's the simplest reason why people are leaving. The "crime" narrative is very popular, but never scaled to population. Comparing the number of murders and roberries to a little podunk town or midsize city without considering how many people live, work or visit NYC daily is a favorite trick for folks who want to spin their little tales.

Despite the incompetent mayor and NYPD, crime is actually down for the most part in NYC:
https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/20...ta%20shows.

Sky high rents are mostly due to lack of supply and hoarding by corporations and money-laundering foreign interests.

Also, the half-million number is New York State. Net population loss was one-quarter of a million. Mostly clickbait, IMHO.

New York City will soon be charging a toll tax to drive to Manhattan.  Absolutely ridiculous.

bullshit

crime is NOT down
they've just downgraded some felonies to misdemeanors
and refuse to prosecute other felonies

https://nypost.com/2022/11/26/conviction...-da-bragg/

... Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has downgraded more than half his felony cases to misdemeanors — while also managing to lose half of the felony cases that do reach court.

Since taking office on Jan. 1, Bragg has downgraded 52% of felony cases to misdemeanor

Bragg issued a controversial “Day One” memo after taking office saying he would no longer seek prison sentences in many crimes, would downgrade felony charges in cases including armed robberies and drug dealing, and drop some misdemeanors.

A short time later, career criminal William Rolon was busted for threatening a store worker with a knife and charged only with a misdemeanor

So far this year,
1,210 felony cases have resulted in a prison sentence,
a 29% drop from 1,699 in 2019.
As for misdemeanor cases, the drop was even steeper — 78% — with just 522 resulting in jail compared to 2,413 in 2019.

Hmm, for some reason, when I first read this title, I thought you were moving away (from New York)... But it's the linked video... Actually, there have been people coming and leaving different cities or states, going to neighboring ones or moving back home with family members. The landscape for many things have changed and well, it's all up to their budget, crime rates, livability, stretching their resources, etc,

Rent is free if you are squatting. All you have to do is find a vacant home, squat there, and if the police come to say you have a lease make them wait a year to evict you.  That's called squatter's rights and if you are a landlord and try to remove these people, YOU will be arrested. Not anymore.

This is similar to the stories about store thefts at Target being the cause for store closings:
https://www.businessinsider.com/target-c...ry-2023-10

NY State's laws are tilted way in favor of landlords & the biggest political contribution group for the majority of NY politicians are: landlords. This includes a semi-legal blacklist for apartment rentals for citizens who sue a landlord.

Fun little tidbit:
making a successful bid for occupancy or ownership in a situation like that, what’s called “adverse possession,” involves at least a decade of continuous occupancy, tax payments to the state, and the blessing of a judge.

Frankly, we are from different sides of the political spectrum and unlikely to ever agree. I am a long-term New Yorker and will likely never be happy with the portrayal of it by conversative media & right-wing minded folks. We could go tit-for-tat without end and not move an inch closer.

To paraphrase Stitch, it's a little broken, but still good.

Axios is a left-leaning media source and essentially echoed what the YouTuber with over 6 million followers said about the crime in New York.

Cardi B, who has over 168 million Instagram followers, not only endorsed Biden for the 2020 election but also conducted a Zoom interview with him.

She is now fed up with what's happening in New York.

Why do I keep citing social media sources? Because, like it or not, they OWN the news cycle now.

The median age of MSNBC viewers is 71, which isn't representative of the average age of tax-paying citizens.

Tit-for-tat, it is, I guess.

Yes, notoriously liberal and progressive mayor Eric Adams:

Cardi B, who splits her time between her homes in Bergen County NJ and Atlanta?
