I have to pick between Civil War and Reconstruction and Substance and alcohol abuse. Which one do you guys think is easier? I passed American government, history I and II, as well as Social science and history. I think I am pretty grounded in the history part, but I have read where some people thought Civil War was a very difficult test. Anyone out there that has taken both? Thanks

It has been a few years since I took both exams but I believe that Substance Abuse was easier. I used Instantcert and the book:
(A Handbook on Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The Biomedical Aspects (Paperback, 1992)
Author: Frederick G. Hofmann, Gail Winger, James H. Woods
I also used instantcert for the Civil War but I had already read numerous books on the subject.
Good Luck,

I haven't taken both. I took the Civil War one. If you're grounded on your history, this one is pretty doable. I used IC extensively and read a big fat history book on the war. I also made a couple of tables for myself--Confederate wins vs. Federal wins, etc. I passed it with a 70, I think.

For what it's worth, I took them both and passed. It's tough to compare apples to oranges. We are talking about two very different subject areas. I found neither to be easy exams. I am also well grounded in history however I found the Civil War exam to be quite a challenge. I thought I had prepared well yet I found a number of questions that seemed difficult and obscure.
The Substance and alcohol abuse seemed to be a bit more straight forward although it had it's share of tricky questions. I've also completed American Gov and Soical Science and Hx. For me, these two exams did not compare to the two upper level DSST exams Civil War and Sub Abuse. Prep and review is the key. Hope this helps.
Good luck to you!

Thanks for the help! I guess I can pick one and if I don't pass it try another. This is my last dantes and 3 more classes, and I graduate! In between times I have to take the subject area tests for teaching. I wish there was an IC for that! The only thing I question is if they might have made the substance abuse harder when they revamped it. I hope not!
Thanks again!!
