What do you all think of Electric Vehicles?

If your car was directly powered by coal? No. But it's more efficient (and thus less polluting) to make 1000W of power at once (for instance) than it is to have 20 generators, each producing 50W of power.

But there are still issues with the batteries and how damaging they can be to the environment.

Don't forget that coal has to be transported by diesel trucks.

Ford said that it expects 40% to 50% of its global vehicle volume to be fully electric by 2030.

My problem isn't range anxiety, it's that I'm not going to pay ten grand more for a new car than I have to just so it can be an EV. When the price is the same, I'll think about it.

I hopped on board over 10 years ago. I'm a big believer, needless to say. Car battery packs are way too valuable not to be recycled (and more likely reused) properly, so I don't share the concern that is sometimes expressed. Even if you live in a place that's still using coal for electricity (not all that many), it's much easier to clean up electricity generation than millions of cars, it's generally cleaner even now. If you can manage rooftop solar, then you don't even have that worry. I'm not going to lie, if you don't have decent incentives where you live, or you can't use the federal tax credit, then the initial purchase is going to be a tad expensive, but it's cheaper than it's ever been to go electric at this stage.

The biggest problem is for those who don't have their own garage that they can install charging in. Renters are kinda stuck until we reach the tipping point where landlords find that NOT having charging is costing them quality tenants. We're just not there, not yet.

Burning coal is cleaner than gas powered vehicles? Burning natural gas is cleaner?

I live in a log cabin @ 5,600 feet, in a National forest, surrounded by three Wilderness areas. I live in a county the size of New Jersey and the largest town has only 3,400 people. We get mail only three days a week. The closest gas station is 30 miles away and if they are not open or have no gas I have to drive another 59 miles to get gas. I doubt that there is anywhere in this county that you can charge a car up. I will never own an electric vehicle.

There were people with old flip phones saying I'll never buy a smartphone and proudly displayed them when asked about it. Finally, my uncle gave in and ended up buying a smartphone lol.

Electric cars are the future.

This $4000 electric car made by GM in partnership with a Chinese company is the most popular electric car in China
https://youtu.be/jNeOCWKt7FE

Small cheap electric cars would be suitable for short-range city driving.

What might end up happening is people will buy cars such as the Prius that are fully electric but features a backup gas-powered engine for range extension. So you would have the choice of getting 85 MPG on gas alone or charging up at home if you wanted fully electric driving.

The cost of batteries is rapidly falling, and soon electric cars will be cheaper than the gasoline version, especially if there are more government subsidies added in the future.

Well, now I know who to visit if I want to get away from it all!

Sounds beautiful, though!
