I have the option to take US History 1 or 2, and I have until the end of September to pass one of the two. My school is also making me take an essay portion administered by them. For context on background, 4.0 student in math and passed the biology CLEP exam after a week of hard studying with a 65.
I hear US history 1 is the easiest. So, I was planning on studying for a couple of days with Wikipedia/random links and Petersons then giving it a shot. If I fail, I'll take a couple of weeks and study hard for 2. What do you think of my strategy?
Also, do you think with IC and Petersons, you'd be confident writing an essay exam after the multiple choice part?
Here is what a history professor at my school told me to be prepared for on the essay exam for US History 2:
The growth of the US government in the post Civil War era from a small government to the system that we have now. Points of growth are the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and the Great Society.
The evolution of the US Constitution since the Civil War: the 14th-16th amendments in the post war era; the right for women to vote; prohibition and its repeal. Look at the shifts in the US Supreme Court surrounding the Civil Rights movement.
The immigration story: note who came before 1900, in the 1900-1920 era, the shutting of the gates 1924-1965, and the new immigration post 1965. Who came? Where did they settle? How were they received? How did they make a life for themselves?
The Civil Rights/women's rights/human rights stories from the 1870s to the present.
The changing economy and US relations with the world. What was produced? Where was it produced? How did trade and production shape our relationship with the world. Look at late 19th century imperialism, the growth of the US on the world stage following WWI and especially following WWII, the Cold War, the post-Cold War era.
Be familiar with the major eras and wars: Gilded Age, Progressive Era, WWI, 1920s, Depression, WWII and after, 1960s, 1970s, etc. Know major events and turning points.

Your strategy sounds like a player, go for it!
I'm not familiar with the essay (Is this something your Prof. wants you to write?), but with IC and petersons, an essay shouldn't be a problem.

Well, generally, US 1 is just history, plain and simple, but US 2 has a lot of stuff on the issues of race, the rise of the woman workforce, and those more complicated topics. I also liked US 1 better, because the REA Clep book I used wasn't as bias (just mostly stated the facts, rather than show forth an opinion - who needs that in a test book - on an issue) as the one for US 2.
