I'm dying to know how some people study for 3 or 4 hours on a subject they know nothing about and then got an exam and PASS!!!! I love to know the trick to this!

I hear you Mindy!!! People at work think this whole testing thing is easy because I keep passing. It is taking weeks of repetitive study. I wish I could just read and remember also.

Being able to recognize bad answer choices and eliminate them improves the odds of guessing correctly.

I think if my tests were free (military benefit) then I might give it a shot, but I've never been willing to roll the dice on a totally new subject. For me, I never tried it because of the money. In addition to the cost of the test, if I had to wait another 6 months to re-test, I would exceed my 12 month enrollment at TESC which would cost me another $2000! So- I can't help you- I always gave myself a couple weeks.

Ha. Even though my test are free(military benefit), I have never tried that. However, I have had a couple of friends do this but the results were rarely positive. The 6 month wait alone was enough to deter me from going that route.

I think a lot of these quick studies are people who are already well versed in the subject. I took a ton of these things without study BUT I took them fresh out of high school were I was a good student and student the same info for 4 year straight. My high school was about on the same level of difficulty as CLEPs so it wasnt terribly difficult. I also took a test taking class, that was very helpful. It was all about the odd of guessing right, not pick the right answers but eliminating the wrong ones and learning vocab word and using reasoning and logic to put the vocab in the context of each question. Some of you old timers might have a harder time with this stuff and there is tons of research that says you guy (the 35 and up crowd) are at a big disadvantage because of the different styles of learning and a completely different style of reading. Most of this is because of the introduction of computers and internet introduced to us (the youngsters) at a crucial time in our development.

On a side note I am actually trying to put together a program at the local high school for kids to take cleps in lue of the class final exams. This would be like a AP program but not limited to the 12 super honor kids and hopefully have high school kids get their diploma and their bachelors around the same time. So far I have had less than the minimal support required to get the program off the ground, but there is stigma associated with my idea to the kids and i think the teachers are a little threatened but the idea of all of their 18 years being as qualified to teach as them.

Jim,
You may find a lot of interest if you approached your local homeschool group. While the group I spoke to was luke warm, I think they are used to non traditional ideas.

A friend of mine tried to bring this into a Charter school and it flopped. My HS Math-teacher-husband initiated the idea for his AP Stats Class to the dept head ... flop. However, I have been approached by two separate homeschool groups asking to PAY me to lead the study groups for them that I have coordinated for my 2 clepping kids and their homeschool friends. If you can knock on that door, it might actually open.

Yeah I know I can't study a few hours and go take an exam, I have to give myself a lot of study time. I'm just amazed at how many people seem to be able to do it and didn't know if there was some magic tip for doing this! Smile

I was wondering the same thing! In fact, when reading how some people studied 3 days "through the flash cards" and then went and passed, ufff... I was starting to feel kind of slow:confused:
