US History I
#1
I have been studying for the US History I CLEP, my second CLEP, for the past couple of days, and tonight took a Collegeboard sample test. In order for my school to accept the credit, I must achieve a 57 on the test. I have two questions.

1) How do the Collegeboard sample tests compare to the official CLEP tests? In the practice test that I took, there were 80 questions and I got 46 of them correct. Is that a good sign? (Taking into account that I have only been studying a couple of days)

2) There are five major topics that I am significantly deficient at. Any good materials/suggestions on how to study for them? They are: various religions(Mormon, Shaker, Quaker, and Puritans), Major Court Cases, The rights and roles of females during the time period, Utopias, and the early colonies.

Any and all help is much appreciated!

Today, I took a free-clep-prep.com practice test. Does anybody know how practice tests from this site compare to CLEP tests? I got an 83 out of 120, and am curious if that's a decent score.

I just get a percentage for each practice exam, and then decide when I think I'm scoring consistently high enough to warrant taking the test. On the first one where you got 46/80, that's 58%. I would not feel comfortable with that score. On the second one where you got 83/120, with 69%, I would only feel good if I got that a couple of times. Since you have to get a higher score than just the 50 most people have to get, I personally would wait until I was scoring in the high 60's/low 70's a few times before scheduling a test.

What sources do you usually use for your practice tests?

I have access to Peterson's website free through my local library system. So I've used those, and the CLEP Official guide and the DSST official guide.

They're similar in difficulty for the History I exam, from my experience. Do not use that to study though.

83 correct is 69.17%. If you need a 57, that is a fail. I would highly recommend the Peterson's practice exams. It is $20.00 for three full-length exams, but is cheaper than retrying the exam. The Peterson's exams are significantly harder than the actual exam, so, if you need a 57, I would accept 60-65% as a pass. I didn't use Peterson's or InstantCert for US History I, and I passed with a 59. If you are nervous, I would recommend Peterson's.
