Hello world,

I am looking to start from square one, I may be able to transfer an AP US history, AP English, and an AP world history but let’s assume 0 current transfer credits (2015 test date) (waiting on test scores to be mailed to me in order to determine, I understand it needs to have at least a score of 3)

I just learned about UMPI while researching WGU and I am most interested in UMPI due to an offering of Bachelor of Arts History and Political Science (polisi concentration).

Looking at this degree so I can become a high school social studies teacher, been subbing for a few years and ready to get that stupid piece of paper.

Very interested in the fact that 90 credits can be obtained from Sophia.org and other choices to save cash but most important, time. 

• I Reside in Central FL
  
• 26 years old
  
• Min 4-5 hours a day can be dedicated to school
  
• Less time spent is better and not opposed to spending some coin to speed the process up.
  
• Looking to walk away with a degree with less than 5k spent
  
• Work full time but don't have any commitments like kids or whatnot
  
• Dread Science and Math Classes, I prefer papers and tests over projects.
  

Link below is the plan I compiled, Classes with a checkmark are completed. Haven't worked out all my elective classes yet, some are listed on the right side of the sheet. Once I see a class I would like to take on either interest or time required, I add it.

If, for whatever reason, you don't have transferable AP English, don't take English Comp at Sophia. Take it at UMPI. It'll be faster/easier at UMPI than it would be at Sophia.

Sophia will also be the fastest/easiest way to get your dreaded science and math classes over with.

Some thoughts:

You have the Gen Eds planned and some electives. What about the major classes?

You only need 30 credits at UMPI, but the major consists of 49 (of which 6 are covered by your two language classes, leaving 43). It makes sense to bring some of those 43 remaining ones in if you want to speed up your time at UMPI.

Especially because English Comp is faster and easier to do at UMPI than Sophia (if you happen to not have the AP score needed), which would mean picking up 6 of your required resident credits by way of the English Comp requirement.

Also note that the classes listed on the web page you linked show some (not all) of the classes offered for polisci, and are there as like? Examples I guess? Especially since the major has sub-reqs not mentioned there (one IR course, one Political Theory, one Comparative Politics, one American Government etc. and the rest of the credits you get from major-specific electives: some polisci, some history--just more polisci).

You don't need to take all of the specific classes mentioned on that webpage though. You could do, since they'd fill out the rest of the major-specific electives. But you don't /have/ to. Plus the history major-specific electives are allowed to be lower level and that page only lists upper level ones.

Below are where you could pick some others up that relate to the major.

You have US Gov AP on the core reqs with a question mark. The U.S. Government class on Sophia fulfils that requirement if it turns out you do not have the AP. It is additionally equivalent to one of the required classes for the polisci concentration (POS 101: American Government).

POS 211: Introduction to Political Thought = Political Science 101: Intro to Political Science (also fulfils the Political Theory req)

Doing just those mentioned so far takes the remaining major credits down from 43 to 34 (and thus closer to the residency requirement of 30). Since you get two exams included in the monthly fee, if you wait until Study.com has a deal or find a discount code it won't work out expensive.

If you do need to take English Comp still because of the AP score, and do it at UMPI, that takes the remaining UMPI credits needed back up to 40. So to knock a few other requirements out since you only need 30 for residency I would consider using Modern States for CLEP vouchers to knock out Western Civilization I and II, and taking both US History I and II on Sophia.

As long as you bring in enough regular electives (i.e. nothing to do with the major) and Gen Eds that leaves you with 33 credits to do at UMPI: 6 for Comp, the rest for your upper-level polisci stuff.

Merging your two threads together, as it's the same thing... And you shouldn't be starting from 0, you should follow the template for the UMPI BA degree and start with the Sophia.org classes first, power your way through a few of them until you're all done with those, get an evaluation from UMPI of everything once you're done... Obviously, skip the courses you have AP and other credits in...
