Transferring credit question
#1
I currently attend a community college and a 4 year school at the same time. I plan on transferring credits from the community college to the 4 year school. A question I have is, will an F from my community college show up on my 4 year school transcript and grade or can I opt not to transfer that class over? I basically forgot to drop a class by the due date and received and F for not showing up and don't want it to affect my 4 year gpa/transcript if possible. I know I need to check w/my adviser, but I she's gone for the holidays and was just wondering what generally happens in a situation like this. thanks

In most cases, you may either elect not to transfer that nasty "F" or the school may just simply not take it at all.

So "generally speaking" the 4 year school wont take it at all and it wont show up on my transcript or gpa w/the 4 year school?

It depends on the school.

Where I teach,(community college) it would be on your transcript if you failed to withdrawal- but you can challenge that decision, in essence having it taken off. (suggestion follows)

At TESC where I just graduated, the class wouldn't show up on your transcript because at TESC, even A's are not recorded- their new policy only brings in credit, and that credit has no bearing on GPA.

At Harvard, everything stays on no matter what and is definitely included in GPA.

Here is the catch when you use 2+ colleges to earn your BA degree. College 1 (AA degree) has policies that may be different than college 2 (BA degree). College 2 trumps college 1 every time. SO, college 2 can decide how/what appears on your transcript- as well as if they will allow CLEPs, etc. (even if college 1 said yes, college 2 can say no).

Next, when you go for your masters, college 3 will get your transcript from college 2 and they will see transfer credits on the transcript. At that point, they will request any and all official transcripts that were accepted by college 2 and or 1.

So, I don't see any possible way to hide this grade EXCEPT for having it removed or replaced. Replacing by repeating can work in some situations, but only if college 1 literally removes it from your transcript- many don't, they just don't count the F in your GPA or toward graduation- that's not the same thing. If you can get it totally erased through replacing (CLEP or coursework) that's one option.

Removal is option 2, and the one I would suggest. You need to fight for it, no one will offer...but... community colleges are very very friendly and you need to talk to your advisor first, department chair, and division dean. (go up the chain as long as necessary) I'm sure that before you hit the dean level it will be removed. You need to explain that you should have been a "failure to withdrawal" (do you know your last date of attendance to support this? If you didn't go to class or turn in homework it would help your position) and that you didn't understand that you had to physically withdrawal or suffer an F.
