bricabrac's suggestions are what I would think would be the issue. If it's not, here's an article from the Google Help files:
The wrong time is listed for messages - Gmail Help

If that doesn't help, you can scroll to the bottom of the following link (where it says Don't see your issue listed above?) and enter a ticket. They'll be able to view your specific account settings and recommend the correct fix.
