The New TESC General Education Requirements- Effective July 1, 2013
#1
As you know, TESC is changing its general education requirements to align with LEAP outcomes. While their website is exceptionally helpful in showing how to use their own classes ($$$) to fulfill these hours, they don't say much about how to use CLEP and DSST exams instead. So, here is a guide to the new requirements while trying to use as few exams as possible. As always, there are many other ways to achieve these credits, and get approval from your advisor if you enroll after July 1, 2013.

NEW TESC General Education Requirements
Effective July 1, 2013

1. Intellectual and Practical Skills (15 credits)
CLEP College Composition (ENC-101/102)- 3 Composition, 3 Writing Intensive Coursework
ALEKS Intermediate Algebra- 3 Math
ALEKS College Algebra, ALEKS Statistics, and/ or Saylor Corporate Communication- pick 2 for 6 hours of electives

2. Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World (18 credits)
Three 6-hour CLEPs fulfill the 3 required hours each in Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Sciences, as well as the 9 elective hours required.
CLEP Social Science – 6 Social Science
CLEP Humanities or CLEP Analyzing/ Interpreting Lit – 6 Humanities
CLEP Natural Science, Biology, or Chemistry -6 Natural Sciences

3. Personal and Social Responsibility (9 credits)
I don’t see any 6-hour CLEPs to fulfill these requirements.
CLEP Introductory Sociology, DSST General Anthropology, and/ or DSST Human/ Cultural Geography – pick any 2 for 3 Diversity/ Global Literacy and 3 Elective
DSST Ethics in America- 3 Responsible Ethical Leadership

So it looks like you could finish the new core requirements with 5 CLEP tests, 2 DSSTs, and 3 ALEKS classes.

Also, if you don't like the idea of taking any math beyond Intermediate Algebra, the DSSTs for Technical Writing and Public Speaking will fulfill the Intellectual and Practical Skills electives for 6 hours.
#3
Also keep in mind that you may be able to use a CBE like the DSST Introduction to World Religions, which is only worth 3 credits, but satisfies the new LEAP requirements while also counting as an Upper Level course.

What are the LEAP req's? If it is part of Gen Ed then it wouldn't be able to go toward upper level, right???? Thanks.

As I understand it, you will be able to "double dip" on the new requirements. So, for example, you could use that DSST in Intro to World Religions as both part of a Liberal Studies or Humanities major AND as part of the LEAPs. This is much like what Charter Oak does with its general eds. I have no idea if this means that there will be more room for free electives or not, but wouldn't it be nice if it did? Surely they will keep the 120-hour total for bachelor's degrees.

Can you tell me where you found the info about double dipping on the website? I'd like to read more about the process if possible.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, they decided not to double dip at TESC. However, I think Charter Oak lets you do so. You might check their website for more details.

Has anyone actually seen a CLEP or DSST fill these new requirements on their evaluation? Not a web link or email or phone call, but actually showing up on your eval?

I have intro to sociology and business ethics, but they don't fill in any of the three new requirement slots when I do an eval.
#9
I thought I would bump this thread and see if anyone has confirmed (seen on their eval) that any CLEP or DSST are acceptable for the Personal and Social Responsibility electives?

I have a ton of CLEP and DSST but none of them fill in these requirements when I do an eval.

I'm still waiting on my official evaluation, but I don't see why CBE wouldn't meet these new requirements.

As long as you match up the requirements with a course from the list, I'm 99.99% positive that they will work.
