Test out Bachelor Degree (without CLEP) using DSST,ECE,TECEP etc, is that possible?
#1
Folks,

I wrote a post couple of days ago and found very helpful replies. Here again I am, since I am unable to take any CLEP (due to reason no CLEP center here in Toronto), I am wondering if I can test out the whole degree by using alternatives such as DSST, ECE-Uxcel,TECEP?

Some one please put me a degree plan replacing CLEP, alternative test to CLEP which would be accepted by Big-3? . I want to have Bachelor Degree, either general studies, business or management, any major.

Please help me, thanks a million in advance.

Cheers!

pretty sure it can't be done

pretty sure you can't even test out any more at any of the big 3 even if you were using CLEP

I think Excelsior is putting in all the capstone requirements in (that have to be done through their courses)
same with COSC

maybe I'm wrong
like to hear it if I am

COSC requires a cornerstone and capstone. I think they also require information literacy which does not have an equivalent test. Excelsior requires a capstone and information literacy. I've heard that one can take this at Penn Foster and transfer it in. TESC requires either a capstone or current trends and applications for most of its degree programs and those courses have to be taken at TESC. However, the capstone for the BSBA can be tested out of using the Strategic Management TECEP or you can transfer in an equivalent course from another school.

I think you can completely test out or get close to it without CLEPs (capstone withstanding). You might have to take Straighterline, ALEKS, and Penn Foster courses. You'll find just about all of the social science and business options at the link below. If you want science and humanities options, refer to the links below that.

Have you considered making a day trip to the nearest testing center. I had the same problem because I live in China. There are no places here to take DSST or CLEP. I studied the instantcert flashcards and took 24 CLEP/DSST/TECEP in 4 days while on vacation in america. It should only take you about an hour to finish most of these tests. Just a thought.

Talpiot College has a testing site the states they offer CLEP/DSST/and general proctoring services Testing Site | Talpiot College They are in Toronto. Rochester and Buffalo NY both have testing center options Talpiot College - CLEP Test Center - College Board | CLEP. As Walter mentioned, this is worth a day trip if need be. TESC in particular offers upper level credit for basic level CLEP's (Management and Marketing)...you need to find a way to take these CLEP's, it will make the whole process easier for you!

Also...COSC does require the Corner and Capstone...but the info literacy requirement if fulfilled in the Cornerstone course.

You definitely need to carefully consider all of your options. CLEP is a great money-saving opportunity.

---------

My impression of the $10,000 exam based degrees that EC has compiled is that they are more focused toward ECE and less toward CLEP.

I do know that it is possible to get the General Business major at EC through mostly ECE/SL/DSST (no CLEP) plus the capstone course. You'd have to look at the rest of requirements (like gen ed and electives) to see if there are enough exam and SL options to complete them, too.

I read somewhere - maybe here in another thread where the OP was also posting - that someone went to Talpiot and was told they no longer do CLEP or any similar tests. I'm sure there are other Toronto sites for DSST - but none for CLEP.

Yes, the US border is about 75 miles from Toronto and exits right into downtown Buffalo. Sad I'm sure there's more than one CLEP centre there, but I haven't been to Buffalo in close to 30 years...and likely won't be. I can well understand why the OP might want to "avoid the CLEP." It would take more than even a $10,000 saving to tempt me! And I'm a certified skinflint!

The BSBA at TESC currently doesn't require a formal capstone through them. While Business Policy is considered the capstone for that degree and the course can be taken at TESC, you can also take the TECEP exam or Strategic Business Management through Penn Foster instead. That's the only one left of the Big 3 without a formal capstone course through the school you are enrolled at.

as for how you can do it without taking any CLEP or DSST exams? It would be difficult and more costly, but you should be able to come close at least with a combination of Straighterline (look at their new courses coming online in a few days), Penn Foster, TECEP, ECE, ALEKS and perhaps courses through other online schools like LSU, Clovic CC or KCTCS. You can find a list of other schools where you can take some needed courses here: Sources of Credit - Degree Forum Wiki

If there is any way that you can do CLEP and DSST exams though I'd highly recommend doing that instead for many of your credits. Even if you have to drive a few hours to the testing center, take a few of them in a single day (others have done this) because you'll save a LOT of money. Both have exams that count as UL credit at TESC, like Principles of Marketing. Much faster and cheaper to do the exam than taking a class, although some of them will now be offered at Straighterline.

College Board website states Talpiot College (whatever that is) to be a CLEP testing centre with limited availability. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do them at all. Have you looked at driving to Buffalo? Buffalo State College and U Buffalo both do CLEP and it's about a 2 hour drive from Toronto. Unless you're barred from entering the US for whatever reason, I don't think driving 2 hours is a big deal. Just take multiple exams in one day.
