Transfer credit for TESC CMP-354 from lower level Intro to Networking???
#1
I have been studying to take the CMP-354 TECEP at TESC. I must score a 70% to pass on this proctored exam. I have an opportunity to take an un-proctored, open-book, open-Internet challenge exam for a similar course at another school for the same cost but I must score an 80% to pass. The other school lists their Intro to Networking as a 175 level course but the material seems very similar. How can I find out if TESC will take the other schools 175 level for their 354? I really need this as upper level at TESC so this is important. Do I just send an email to the advisement team? How long do they take to respond?

Strayer University - CIS-175 Introduction to Networking
Introduces the basic concepts of computer networks. Covers basic topologies, protocols, performance issues, and software for LANS/WANS. Textbook is Network+ Guide to Networks 5th Edition by Tamara Dean.
1. Contrast the three main categories of networks: Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN).
2. Depict the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model and some of the hardware and software associated with each layer.
3. Identify the relationship of the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model to the OSI model.
4. Explain network architectures including peer-to-peer, client-server and hybrid network architectures.
5. Describe network services and software including the various network operating systems (NOS).
6. Illustrate network physical and logical topologies including ring, bus, star, mesh and hybrid.
7. Apply network design principles through a network design project.
8. Identify the processes involved in troubleshooting and resolving network problems.
9. Identify the processes and strategies related to data integrity and security.

Thomas Edison - CMP-354-OL Network Technology
This course teaches practical approaches when designing and implementing a network environment of varying sizes. It includes an analysis of the physical and logical aspects of the network infrastructure and the various industry standards and models available. Textbook is Networking Basics by Ciccarelli, etal
1. Describe the different types of networks and architectures.
2. Explain the need for standards organizations and network models.
3. Assess the characteristics of a physical and logical topology.
4. Identify the functionality of various types of network media and devices.
5. Discuss the role of low and high level data communication protocols.
6. Evaluate the functions of various types of network servers and services.
7. Apply the common types of management techniques and tools to monitor and troubleshoot the network.
8. Analyze the concepts needed for security and where it should be applied to minimize exposure on a network.

OK Jam please understand that I'm telling you how I did it. It may or may not work for you. Depends on who you speak to and how persistent you are. I'm of an age where I press until I get my way. I successfully had my son's (100 level) Networking course re-classified as COS-399. It can be done. COS-399 is a catch all designation within TESC's system for courses that previously have not been classified.

I used the actual course link CET 1179 - Network Concepts and Operating Systems: Catalog 2011-12 - Seminole State College of Florida
..and TESC's Thomas Edison State College: Secondary Category Landing Page

Also here is another course from the PLA database http://www2.tesc.edu/plasearch.php Search "Computer Networking"

Computer Networking Systems (CAP-302) 3.00 s.h.*
The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the theory, design, and setup of LANs, WANs, and Internet and also how ISO reference models work and networking protocols are configured to build well-organized network architecture. Students should be able to discuss network topologies, IP addressing and subnet masks, simple routing techniques and switching terminology as well as the principles of the OSI model, different classes of IP addressing and sub-netting. Students should also be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to manage network security, traffic and congestion.

Simply listing them out the way you did will not work. They will reject it. Link to the actual current course description.

Good luck!

Just an update. I sent TESC the course syllabus for Strayer's CIS-175 along with links to the course catalog. TESC did say they would take Strayer CIS-175 as credit for CMP-354, but apparently CMP-354 only counts for general elective and does not count as a computer science elective for the BACS degree. This sucks because I was planning on CMP-354 to satisfy some of my upper level computer science requirements!

That's not true. It does count as a computer science elective.

CMP 354 qualifies as an upper level course for BA in CS.

I am currently completing my BA in CS and that was my last course.
Unfortunately I was not able to pass the TECEP twice and I am currently looking for an alternative.

Question: How much was the price for the Strayer course? Is it self paced or an exam? Can you take it anytime?

Regards,

Ronald.
