Ah ok. I haven't applied yet so I don't think I have that option. My plan is to knock out the Gen ed stuff first and just save it with ACE. Once I'm ready, I'll then apply ...

My advice, don't wait. Go ahead and apply so you get access to advising, and can have courses planned and put into your evaluation. Also, as you take CLEP and DSST exams, you get to send the score to one school for free, but that doesn't work if you haven't applied. You get a year after being accepted before you have to take something and become enrolled, so apply, then before the year's up, take the cornerstone or a TECEP. People have gotten blind-sided by changes out of the blue, but applying and getting your courses planned can protect you from a lot of it.

I also found it to be a powerful motivator to be official and see my courses populated in the evaluation.

I'm currently working a summer job that will end in October. My gameplan is to study hard after that (since we have long winters where I live). Lets say I did not want to enroll after a year. Is it possible to repay the application fee for another year or does one need to take action and enroll? I'm all about pinching pennies, but based on what you said, I'd say it's worth $75 to access those resources and also give peace of mind.

No, you won't have the option until you enroll.

I would wait to post your spreadsheet until you have all of your courses pre-approved by TESU. You don't want to post something and then later find out that TESU won't accept something that you thought they would.

Regarding the Public Policy course, you could see if CSU-Global's Law Enforcement & American Policing will fit (not sure if that will duplicate the Law Enforcement course instead).

And, finally, I would take the CJ DSST exam as it's 6cr, and the Intro to Law Enforcement DSST as it's UL. Those are supposed to be easier courses as well.

You're right. I would appreciate it if people looked over my plan to make sure there are not any flaws in it. Perhaps I can just post it in this thread with the disclaimer that it may be incorrect. Thanks for the advice - I'll look into how CSU works.

I'm a little confused here, as you're asking what would happen if you didn't want to enroll after a year, and then asking if you could just re-apply at that time. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you're saying you're not ready in a year's timeframe, but still want to be enrolled?

Let me try to clarify. If you pay the $75 and apply, you then need to enroll. To do that, you either need to take a course or exam. The cheapest way to do this is to take the Cornerstone ($300) or a TECEP ($114).

If you do not enroll, then what happens is that anything that you find out about your degree, anything that is in force when you first applied, is now gone. You have to re-apply, and they will start you over as a new student, under the catalog that is current at that time. If anything has changed at that point, like they don't accept credits that they would have accepted when you applied the first time around, you're out of luck.

So, my advice is always to apply, get an eval, and if you decide to go with TESU, enroll. Take a TECEP that will apply to your degree. Then, that locks you in for a year. When the 9 month point comes up, take another TECEP and keep the enrollment going.

If you apply, get the eval, and are not happy with what you get, then obviously you will want to see where your credits might be applied in a more advantageous way through another school. But, it's worth $75 (in my book) to get that eval and see where you stand with them.

Also, you can't get info on courses unless you're enrolled. So, if you do enroll, you are then able to get pre-approval on those courses you want to bring in. That can help you determine if you're better off at TESU or elsewhere.

Yes you can certainly reapply, but as dfrecore said, you lose locking in your catalog or any transfer equivalencies that advising has approved. Compared to not applying at all, you're only out the $75. Since TECEPs are reasonably cheap, and the Cornerstone is going to be required for any degree, you might as well go ahead and take one of them and be enrolled... unless you decide to drop out altogether.

Disclaimer: this is my proposed plan - nothing in this table is set in stone.

Also, after this summer job is over I will most likely apply to TESU! If they were to change anything, what time of year would they normally do that at? I would like to get grandfathered in with the current requirements if possible. I really appreciate everyone's advise!

A couple of things:

It is Straighterline, not Starterline.

Public Speaking can be done through DSST or SL (not Saylor)

TESU does not allow you to count a course for 2 different areas. So, once you take a course and put it in a slot, that's where it stays. For instance, if you take an Ethics course, it counts as the Ethics requirement. Not as Ethics and again as a Knowledge of Human Cultures or Gen Ed Elective. If you were doing this through COSC instead, courses DO count in more than one area - but they do not allow you to count the credits twice as you have done on your spreadsheet.

You need to revise this, taking out everything you've listed twice (or more).

I believe the only 6 credit Intro to Criminal Justice option is the DSST exam. Most other options are only 3 credits.
