TESU SOS-110 Living in the Information Age
#11
Thank you for sharing. Even though I might not be required to take this course, I am feeling unnerved at the thought of having to do so much writing- for what is supposed to be an entry-level cornerstone course. Combined with all the other writing one does for Eng-101 & 102, the other upper level courses, and the Capstone, it makes the whole degree process intense and daunting.

I think they are trying to get you prepared for the capstone, so teaching you everything you need to know before you get to that point.

If you were at a B&M school, you'd probably do a lot more writing than this.

Yes, I understand a B&M school might require a lot more writing. But the main selling point of these Big 3 schools is that they allow you to get your degree faster. From that perspective, intense work like this slows us down.

But getting you prepared for the capstone will actually make that course easier.  So in effect, you're just switching time from one course to another.  Believe me, if I wasn't a good writer, and understood what was expected of me ahead of time, it would have taken me 2-3x longer to do the capstone course.  Instead, I was able to do it in a very manageable amount of time each week.  I can't imagine if I was less prepared.

Not saying I agree with the cornerstone course (esp the cost), but I can see how it would be a benefit.

It might seem like intense work, but honestly SOS-110 is so easy once you see what the actual writing assignments are. English 101/102 are way more work.

500 - 700 word essays are really easy and the subject matter is very general. I have a tendency to overwrite with this course and I'm not a good writer. I only have 1 1/2 modules left and may be done 100% this week. FYI - I only took this course because I had the funding and thought it would help me become a better writer for graduate school.

I am now working on the last small paper for the class and it's only 700 words. Since it's about my personal goals I won't have any issues writing 1000 words or more to complete this course. The TESU grading system is not really good since it averages all of your future assignments and your grade will show an F until your over 80% done with the course. The good part is you will know your grade at the end without having to wait.

In my experience from the courses I've done at TESU, the forum posts(and responses to 2 posts)are basically just participation points for the course. As long as you complete it on time and put forth a reasonable effort, you should get full marks on those assignments.

Yes, you are correct and I find those useless for the most point. I prefer taking the guided courses and not the ones with the online forum postings. If I was wanting to talk to people I would be in a classroom.

Final Update:

I only took this because I needed an easy course and thought I would test it and report back here. I just needed to fulfill a VA requirement of 6 CR.

The class is easy from a writing standpoint. However, there is an area called foundations that has nothing to do with the purpose of this course. It's somewhat hidden within the Moodle course so you have to click on everything. Scoring well on the tests there still doesn't mean the system will pass you. So make sure to start this early.

The writing assignments related to the course are helpful, but the extra busy work makes the class a waste of time for people who have a lot of credits and already write academic essays.

If you need to take the course please use Crystal Sands. She is a good mentor and really tries to work with you.

I don't recommend taking the course unless they make you. Try for an exemption or a waiver first.
