BSBA Progress Recommendations?
#1
Hello All,

I've been lurking here for a while, and recently had my transcript from my previous education sent to Excelsior for review. After the review, it really kicked me into gear to go and finish my Bachelor's. My previous institution was a quarter hour college (Baker College in Michigan) and it kind of screwed me over for credits. I have a total of 66 quarter credits which translated to about 42 semester credits at Excelsior. My ultimate goal is to be able to take this Bachelor's and possibly apply for Law School, my GPA right now is 3.44.

I have nearly completed 15 SL classes (Just need to take the final and write a paper for one). I'm looking for recommendations on the best way to complete a BSBA at either Excelsior or TESU. I am leaning towards TESU since I live in NJ. I am okay with taking a couple classes if needed, but looking to save money and get this done ASAP so I can move on. Am I correct that required classes I completed at Baker will fulfill the course requirements but I will need to take more elective courses to make up for it?

My Baker transcript is below:

I have completed and passed the following classes on SL (Just need to take the final):

Accounting II
Principles of Management
Business Communication
Business Statistics
US History I
US History II
Business Ethics
American Government
Introduction to Religion
Organizational Behavior
Managerial Accounting
Financial Accounting
Western Civ I
Western Civ II
Intro to Sociology

I appreciate any help in guidance of what other classes I should take at SL or elsewhere. I am not big on just test taking, as I do not have a lot of time to work with to get to testing center, etc. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Do yourself a favor, download the BSBA General Management template in my signature and plug in what you see you have done in Baker and SL into it.
Note: A few of your classes will be placed into the "other field" meaning it won't be for credit at TESU, or it'll be used as a Free Elective.

I noticed your Math class you have numbered 099, that won't be for credit as TESU would think those are developmental math credits.
If that is the case, you're missing College Algebra. Since Baker is a 4 year college, your courses may just go in directly to the spreadsheet.
If Baker was a 2 year college, none of the UL credits would go through properly. I recommend the Study.com/SL combo!!

From a quick skim of what you have, you should continue onward with SL (as per spreadsheet for AOS options). You should also take
the Study.com courses that are in the mentioned in the spreadsheet and AOS as I think you're missing them and SL doesn't offer those.
Post what you have from that spreadsheet into this thread and also use this thread as your accountability thread for reference.

Great, thanks I will download that now, very helpful. Any comment on if the quarter hour transfer deficiency will just result in more electives being needed?

That's exactly how it works. For example, a 4 quarter unit course becomes a 2.66 semester unit course, and is used to fulfill a 3 unit GenEd requirement. That leaves an extra .33 unit of GenEd electives to do. So if that happens 9 times, you then need one 3 unit GenEd elective to make them up. If that happens in your area of study, you need another AOS course to make the missing units up.

Note that it sometimes works the other way, with a 5 quarter unit course counting for 3.33 units giving you an extra third of a unit that gets pushed into electives.

It also happens with semester units, for instance, my higher math courses from CC were all 4 and 5 units, which helped fill in a lot of GenEd units.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

Thanks for the clarification. In your experience, do you think I should try to take some actual classes to get into an MBA or Law program, or do you think my baker transcript with 3.4 GPA should be enough? Want to get the best value but don't want to screw myself over either.

You're thinking too far ahead. I would recommend taking community college credits to bring those up to 60 and to get a letter grade in them.
But it's not necessary as the Straighterline courses you have taken don't have a letter grade assigned to them when transferred into any school.
You will need to take at least one course from Excelsior or TESU and it's the capstone. Try to get a good grade in that and you should be fine.

Most schools will look at the "last 60 credits" for their Masters or Professional programs, but that's not all they look at, so don't let GPA be holding you back.
The main thing is to get that degree parchment so you actually can apply for grad school... I would still recommend TESU over Excelsior, take your pick.
BTW, which AOS (Area of Study) are you going for within the BSBA? Is it the General Management option or something else?

Makes sense. I am going for BSBA general management as it seems the most flexible. I'm thinking I'll finish up on Straighterline with the few more courses I need from them, then send over my transcripts from Baker/Straighterline. I've read that I can send over other transcripts later on after I completed classes at Study.com, is that right? I think I'd like to get an official eval done after Straighterline so I know exactly where I stand with quarter hour credits/what will be accepted etc.

Yeah, I suggest sending in all the completed courses from Straighterline once they're done and Baker College as well.
They'll show you what you've completed and what courses are required, enter that into your spreadsheet for reference.

Complete whatever you need to complete from Study.com to finish off the degree at TESU.
Have you decided on TESU vs Excelsior? The courses accepted at TESU may differ than what's at Excelsior.
