TESC's Managerial/Business Communication Requirement

Hello Everyone,

I read on a post that the Straighterline Business Communication course and Pen Foster's Business and Technical Writing course can be used to fulfill TESC's Managerial/Business Communication requirement. Could anyone please supply me with more information about these courses? How hard or easy are they? What is the work involved? Are the exams all multiple choice? What kind of writing assignments do they have? How does one go about registering for the course?

Straighterline's biz comm tests are timed multiple choice online no proctor sitting at your desk. There are a lot of tests. 1 per chapter. It makes it easier to find the answers in the book this way though.
After finishing the tests you have to submit 3 papers.
An email request for appointment, a resume and cover letter and finally a medium sized report.
The report takes some time due to the MLA formatting and number of words required.

I finished the tests in 2 days and the papers took a week. The papers take 3-4 days to grade.

I thought the process was great. I took Accting I and II through them. Finished biz comm last month. You cannot beat the price.

You must have the book, it is 120% required. I got a little bit older version on amazon.com for less than 10 dollars shipped.

Ryoder, thanks for the information. Are the exams all open book? How long did the report have to be? Could you choose what to report on or were you given a subject? How was the process to register for the course? Does the course begin immediately after registering?

Also, does anyone have information about the Penn Foster course so I could compare.

Straighter line gives you access to the course about one day after signing up. You need to buy the book now then sign up and you can be on your way in two days max with shipping.
The tests are timed open book at home no proctor.
The short report was fourteen hundred words I think and you get to pick from three topics. Mine was, you are selecting your companies Internet policy, compare a few policies and make a recommendation to management.
The book gives sample reports so that you get the cover page and other formatting right.

Penn foster takes longer and costs more so I would do straighter line for any classes you need. I finished the tests in a couple of days and the papers took a week off and on.

Penn foster tests are online unproctored multiple choice with a final exam that is either proctored with essays and multiple choice open book or some classes like financial management are open book unproctored un timed fill in your answers in a word doc and submit for grading. Sort of like you submit a writing assignment.

This may be my first Starightline course. As everyone noted how they liked the course and process, but I never did see a "Yes" that this course will indeed satisfy the TESC requirement of Managerial Business Communications.

Maybe because everyone responded, that was a yes? Sorry, sometimes even at my age, I need my hand held :p

Now that I’ve taken both courses, I wanted to quickly follow up on this thread. Penn Fosters Business & Technical Writing course was SO MUCH EASIER and FASTER than SL Business Communications. I can now officially state all SL courses I’ve taken (seven) were painful, cheap but painful.

Penn Foster:
M/C quizzes: 2 - 20q. Four written assignments: (1) memo & email=2pgs; (2) investigational methods, questionnaire, graph=1pg each and letter=1pg; (3) report outline=1pg and field report letter=2pgs; (4) informal proposal (compilation of prior work - no word count req. I submitted 4 pgs).

Straighterline:
M/C quizzes: 14 - 10q chapter, 50q midterm, 50q final. Three written assignments: (1) email=1pg; (2) resume/cover letter=2pgs; (3) short report (1200-1500 words).

Yes, PF is more expensive but SL is a ton of busy work (albeit faster than a full semester course). It would be nice if you could use both PF for the managerial communication requirement and SL's course to fill a BSBA business elective requirement. Then and only then, it makes sense.

Hopefully this information helps someone in the future.
