TESC registration..Sooner or later?
#1
Hi.....This if my first post here and I'm pretty sure it won't be my last.

I have a quick question regarding enrollment with TESC. Money is an issue with me and I would like to know from the veterans here if it is better to knock out most of my credits on my own and then enroll in the school once I'm much closer to the degree, or should I enroll right away?

I'm interested in a BA in Social Sciences, or possibly Homeland Security, and I'm basically starting from scratch.

My general plan is to first have old transcripts sent to me from community colleges years ago and see what I have. I should have about 15 or 20 credits in English 101, ANT 101, PSY101, history and oceanography.

I'm starting the FEMA courses tonight and will be enrolling in the straighterline algebra course as soon as I finish the FEMA courses.

I'm also going to try to get some Academy courses I've taken evaluated through ACE to see if I can get some credits there.

Hopefully I will be able to get the rest through testing.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

I am kind of in the same boat you are in. I plan to enroll in TESC soon. One book that has been extremely helpful for me is called College Without Compromise by Scott and Kris Wightman. Another is Accelerated Distance Learning by Brad Voeller. The book by the Wightmans is geared to Christian home schooled students, but has very helpful information that anyone could benefit from.

I will quote from College Without Compromise to, I hope, help answer your question (this quote is referring specifically to TESC):

"Tuition is paid each year that the student is enrolled, so if the degree will take several years to complete, the longer you put off the enrollment process the better. However, because the enrollment is good for a year, there is no need to wait until the last minute, either. So, just start accumulating credits, enroll about a year before you plan to graduate and then transfer all your credits in."

Of course, this is assuming that you plan to complete your degree mostly using credit-by-examination. But I hope this helps.

One program you might be interested in is CollegePlus!

Welcome to IC! You should enroll when you have less than a year to go. If you plan on enrolling in TESC, then you might want to make sure that they will accept
straighterline
courses. I was told today that they will not.

Call back and talk to someone else. Ask them if they accept credits from FHSU?

They definitely accept credits from FHSU. You can look in the college catalog and see that they accept courses from all colleges that are RA, including the one that accredited FHSU. The only issue I see, if it matters, when I look at the course in Tiger Tracks (FHSU) it says "Math 110 "STR" College Algebra B 3.0", the STR might mean straighterline and be a red flag, we'll see. The less calls the better.

If you have any TECEPs, save them for last, and hold out as long as you can. Tuition is a lot as you know and it would stink to pay it twice.

What they told me is that they will accept credits from FHSU for courses taken FROM FHSU, but not originating from straighterline.

With the Big 3, the best rule of thumb is usually to wait until the end of your testing to enroll. . . but with TESC I'm hearing of slow response times, so I would not quite that long-- If you have any classes to take near the end of your degree program (or can put them there), enroll just before starting the class(es). That way, you can be busily occupied while TESC takes its time to process your enrollment.

Thanks for the replies everyone!!! I'm really glad I found this site. I'm going to wait until near the end to enroll.

I started rounding up my transcripts today so I can start planning a course of action. I guess I'll hold off on the straighterliner courses until I'm really clear on if TESC will except the courses.

Thanks again!!!!
