TESC did horrible on final - can I still pass class?
#1
So I had to take 4 finals in 2 days. I did great on three, but I'm pretty sure I failed the last one. I just pushed it too much.

Anyway, I had an A in the class going into the final so even a 40% on the final would leave my overall score in the class at 82% (B). Can you fail the final and still pass the course?

Thanks

It will depend on the weight of the final in your overall course grade. Some instructors weight a final like a regular exam, some will weight it as two or three exam grades, other schools will mandate that the mid-term and final equate to 50% of the overall course grade. I know one instructor that bases your overall course grade on just your midterm and final, so 50% each. It will depend on the school and instructor policy which you should find in your syllabus. Good luck!

Finals are typically either 20 or 30% of your overall grade for TESC courses if a midterm or midterm assignment was also required. If no midterm was required, it may be upwards of 50%, but usually 20 or 30%. Take a look at the weights listed in your grade book in Blackboard. If it's 30%, you could get a zero on the exam and still have as high as a 70% if you did very well on all other assignments. No matter how bad you feel like you did, I'm sure you got better than a zero. I've taken a few exams during my stint that I was certain I did not do great on, and turned out with an A or B. Take a look at the grade book for the weight, take a deep breath, and just wait. Chances are very, very good you still passed and came out with a respectable grade.

These guys are all correct, and unless your syllabus SPECIFICALLY STATES that you MUST pass the final with a grade of X in order to pass the class, it's simply a math problem for you. It looks like you'll be fine unless your mentor said otherwise (in writing, on the first day- he can't "add" that now)

Wow I got a 40%. I got 0's for the 3 essay questions worth 60% of the grade. So horrible. I still have an 82% overall grade in the course. I didn't see anywhere in the syllabus where you had to pass the final. Hopefully I can pull out a B. I got A's in the three other courses I took this term.

Here's an update. So my grade for the final now shows 90%. I don't know how. Two of the essays worth 40% I left blank and the third I answered poorly. I did get all other questions correct. So I should have gotten a 40-60% grade. When I drill down into the exam it shows 40% but the instructor gave me a 90%. Is this a massive grade curve or an error? I guess I need to wait until the final course grade is recorded.

** fingers crossed for grade curve **

If plenty of students had bad test results, sometimes the teacher will adjust the grading scale giving less points on the essays and more on the multi-choice. Hope it works out for you.

I am assuming the 90 was most likely the final course grade (including DFs WA's and tests).

on your grades page it will have entry lines for each DF & WA, midterm, final and then on the final line you will see the final grade. Keep in mind not all mentors publish the final course grade on this page; sometimes you have to wait until they submit it to the college and then it shows on your academic evaluation.
