On my son's TESC evaluation Straighterline microbiology was transcribed BIO-215. I thought straighterline microbiology transcribed as BIO-315, was I wrong?
I sent TESC an email, this was the response.
Good morning,
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately The Microbiology you completed is without lab so the equivalency of BIO-251 is correct. The Microbiology with lab is equated to BIO-351. I do apologize for the confusion.

SL no longer offers Microbiology with lab. The lecture and lab portions are only offered as two separate courses. TESC's equivalency page on SL's website says that Microbiology and Microbiology with lab are both BIO-351. Send them the link and take a screenshot.

How can a lab magically turn a LL course to an UL course? This is from their PLA database.
Quote:Microbiology for Health (BIO-251) 4.00 s.h. ***
Fundamental concepts in microbiology and the relationship of microorganisms to disease, epidemiology, and the balance of nature. Laboratory emphasis: the physiology of bacteria, preparation and use of selective and differential media and related methodology.
Quote:Microbiology (BIO-351) 4.00 s.h.
The course emphasizes the principles of biology as they apply to microorganisms. The morphology, anatomy, physiology, growth, metabolism, nutrition, control, and identification of the various microbes are discussed. Representative laboratory exercises include staining procedures, media preparation, pure culture techniques, culture identification, serology, and phage typing.

On my transcript it transferred as BIO-351 (course taken last year but just transferred this month) and just the straighterline course, no lab.
The Straighterline equivalency page also shows 3 credits and BIO-351 for the class:

That was my prediction and TESC seems to be providing yet more data to confirm. I would no longer rely on the PLA database or anything published for that matter as proof of where a course will land. I think we can all agree they are making it up (new rules/procedures) as time goes on.

Microbiology has always been iffy. For a while they have automatically listed community college Micro as LL and 4-year university Micro as UL, EVEN IF the 4-year university class had a 200 level title. Not to hate on SL, but they're not even a college, I've been wondering why they got something that the CCs didn't even get. My micro was through a CC, and I'd considered retaking it with SL just for that purpose. Obviously not going to now, but this doesn't shock me that much.

Cook,
Thank you for the explanation! I can see how this case may differ but what are your thoughts regarding the with/without lab distinction?
Edit: Never mind, it's been "solved!" LOL

From TESC
Thank you for your email. You are correct and we have correct your evaluation. You should now have BIO-351 for Microbiology! I do apologize for the confusion.
Have a great day!

Have a great day! That's good. It seemed pretty obvious it was a mistake because their partner page says BIO-351. Up to date or not, that is a contract with the student.

Thinking of Cook's comment and the initial evaluation, I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the near future there might be a change in how the SL course is evaluated. Although I hope this would not happen, it's difficult to find cheap NatSci UL credit, only time will tell. TESC has been known to make these types of abrupt changes.
Cook, now just might be the time to take the course after all!!:coolgleam:
