I'm studying for my BA in Psych at TESC. I have to take a Statistics math course (level 200 math class) and I'm honestly pretty worried about it. I am horrendous at math. Like, cried my way through all of high school math because I just couldn't get it.
So I have some questions:
1. Has anyone taken this class? And if so, how hard are we talking here?
2. I've kept ALEKS in the back of my mind and I'm pretty sure I'll be using it for tutoring but I've heard in the past it could count for credit like a CLEP? And if that's true, I would much rather do ALEKS than the class.

Borrowing these alternatives from Sanantone's degree plan:
Principles of Statistics: DSST, Straighterline, ALEKS, TECEP, Propero, Sophia Learning, and UExcel ECEP
from: Sanantone's BSBA General Management - Degree Forum Wiki (under the Statistics requirement)

Why not try sophia since it is apparently free until the 31st of this month? Naturally Aleks is the cheapest route otherwise; however, Aleks is not for everyone. Some people don't like the way it is set up and find it hard to do. I utilized Aleks for some other math courses such as trigonometry but Aleks and stats did not mix well for me. I personally utilized Straighterline business stats. The format just worked better for me and it transferred over as statistics. Long story short you will just have to try something and see if it works for you; however, I would suggest trying something cheap or free first.

You will find from other threads in this forum that most people find the ALEKS stats very difficult because the learning model within ALEKS is not strong on presenting concepts rather than calculations. Stats does not take much math but it's concepts can be difficult to grasp if not presented in a coherent, logical, and structured manner. You can test this out for yourself by trying out the free ALEKS 3 hour trial assessment. For my math-phobic students I am recommending this free, self paced online non credit course from Carnegie Mellon: Statistical Reasoning | Open Learning Initiative Then after finishing this course you could document your knowledge for credit with the self-paced untimed ALEKS Stats course assessment. However, as a psych major, you really need to know this stuff for future use. So, instead of ALEKS, I would recommend repeating the learning experience with the self paced graded Ohio U course PSY 2110: OHIO eCampusOHIO eCampus With the new thrust into Evidence Based Practice for Psychology you will have to overcome your math fears and my recommendation is based upon previous success with others like yourself. It will take some time, but there is never any pressure with these self-paced highly structured courses. If your basic math skills are really rusty or even non existent, then do the ALEKS course Math Essentials before anything else. You will be amazed how quickly and easily your math phobia will melt with finally conquering the basics very soundly. ALEKS is really super here because of it's infinite patience and self paced learning model for calculation centric knowledge and practice. You can do math. You have just had very poor teachers and were not given enough time and practice to develop the necessary skills before being pushed ahead without a solid foundations at each sequential level.

bluebooger, have you actually taken these courses? I have looked into them in detail. They are excellently structured, with good course materials included, and with real tutors just an email away with personalized help. However, the fixed term would probably put time pressure on my math phobic students. I believe they would start to cram rather than learn and that will get them into trouble in the latter stages of the course.

I have not taken those courses
I only know about them because I'm going to take a couple of other courses through them
Statistics.com - SQL and R - Introduction to Database Queries
Statistics.com - Introduction to Python for Analytics
khan has some videos on statistics
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability
this non credit course started 2 weeks ago
https://www.coursera.org/course/statistics
but it's not too late to sign up
you might have a problem with the R programming though
but you don't have to install R and do the homework programming assignments
you can just watch the videos and concentrate on the statistics
also this free non credit
https://www.coursera.org/course/probability
another free non-credit
https://www.edx.org/course/i-heart-stats...ex-soc120x
and this
https://www.edx.org/course/data-analysis...ftx-ex101x
(if any of those free courses ask for money, just choose the "no thank you, I want it free option")

Before you get too worked up, I'd suggest watching this free video series from Annenberg. They really, really, really helped me!! I still have never even taken an algebra course, but passed statistics (I started with ALEKS but later switched to these videos + khan academy, which was enough to pass the DSST) so if I can do it, you can do it. I really suggest giving the videos a try as an introduction to the subject, and then decide if you could learn it on your own using Khan or if you need to pay for something. Good luck!

I'm in the middle of the Sophia Statistics course now. It is pretty easy so far. I like the way the site is set up and I took advantage of the free class.
