TESC Overhauling Gen Ed Reqs. Not enrolled, watch out!
#41
With these changes it will force me to take another look at COSC as I will not have the full enrollment fee TESC by July. I have my AAS with TESC, but I might have to make a change in plans. If I have to take these courses any way........ COSC's payment plans and cost structure maybe a better fit for me.

Armyb77, I just spoke with a rep for TESC and was told that if you apply with TESC and you are active duty, they will not change your degree plan as long as you have paid your application fee and currently active duty. It applies to Active duty and dependents- they are the only exception. I hope this helps. I'm a military dependent.

Just received this response from TESC to my inquiry:

Thank you for taking the time to share your sentiments regarding our General Education Electives initiative. I would like to clarify that the courses you mentioned are a) not courses that would necessarily be required for your child's degree program. They are considered electives and therefore, you would have the option to not take those specific courses; b) not new courses. We have been offering these courses for several years; they are not new as a result of the General Education Electives requirements. Please be assured that we would not force you to take these courses, nor are we forcing your child -- or any homeschooled child -- to take them if you prefer not to. We have many other appropriate courses that you would find more suitable to your interests.

The dean of the Heavin School of Arts and Sciences will post more detailed information to our website in the next several weeks.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

I'm interested in seeing their explanation regarding these "new requirements" which they now say are neither "new" nor "required".

Thanks for the help, they (TESC) were very cryptic and talked around the issue when I talked to them.

Thanks!

All the Florida schools went through this type of change back in the 90s when I was attending USF. All of my gen eds and exit requirements changed after I left the school and re-enrolled. Some of the courses I took to fulfill exit requirements became electives and for that reason I had to take human cultural anthropology instead of intro to anthropology. I could have also chosen religions of the world.
Additionally, an ethics requirement was mandated but since I was looking at an IT degree computer ethics was the ticket to that. So I think it will be similar at TESC. The liberal arts people at the school shake up their core and exit requirements every once in a while.

This really won't affect too many people outside of this forum as the vast majority of students at TESC are traditional students, so they will just be taking different classes in the same format. There was a great thread on this here. None of my classmates in the one class I took at TESC were using any sort of CBE or alternative credit methods - they were all just taking classes at TESC. When I offered to tell them about alternatives none of them took me up on it.

I didn't think TESC, or any of the Big Three, had an actual campus where students went to take classes. I was under the impression that their campuses were just administration buildings. Is this incorrect?

TESC has on campus nursing, but what they meant was that these other people were focused on taking online courses from the school and paying the tuition for each course.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
