TESC Comp II & Tech Writing Reqs.
#1
While waiting for my TESC initial eval., I'm trying to brainstorm some possible scenarios with subsequent options.

My transcript from a California CC showsa remedial 3 hr composition course (Engl 67), a "Degree Appropriate" (but not transferable to senior institutions) 3hr composition course (Engl 68), and senior college 4hr Compostion (Engl 1A).
Just for info:
California college requirements for degree level communication (written and oral) can be met with this Engl 1A Comp., Spch 1A Public Speaking, and Psych 5 Critcal Thinking - a writing instensive course - all of which I have for my fully transferable 60 hr AA within the California system.

My BSAST degree requires ENC 101,102 and Eng-201. Now depending on whether TESC gives me credit for Comp II, I am trying to think about how to complete the Tech Writing req. Another constraint: Even though I qualify for extra time on essay writing tests, I try to avoid these as much as possible because the time constraint prevents me from showing all of my true skills at writing the finished product.

Scenario 1: I get credit for Comp II Enc 102, then I go for the DSST multiple choice test for Tech Writing

Scenario 2: I have to take Comp II - I fill it with the independent study Straighterline Engl 102, then DSST the Tech Writing

Scenario 3: I appeal the initial denial of Comp II (the syllabus of my Engl 1A clearly covers the same content) and "negotiate" by paying for the TESC guided study Tech Wriiting if that could swing the argument in my favor

As an additonal aside: Would TESC accept the Penn Foster Bus. Tech Writing course for their requirement?

Comments? Other Options? Scenarios?

How about DSST Tech Writing? TESC takes that exam.

They have a history of not accepting business writing or any other course that doesn't fit into the sequence. My state (MN) has students take a single course, in my case it was 4 credits and meets all requirements to graduate statewide. TESC will want the next possible thing to fit in, most end up with Straighterline or the College Composition CLEP (the full exam, not modular). If you do the CLEP then you'll end up with duplicated credits but for a good writer the exam is pretty quick and painless (other than the wait for results which takes a few weeks). You can try to "negotiate" as you said but the history for this issue is that TESC won't bend many rules on English Comp courses since they see both ENC101 & ENC102 as the foundation to their degrees. TESC's degree planning handbook (which I can't seem to find on their site anymore but have a PDF on my computer) states that coursework must be in "expository writing, NOT creative, technical, or business writing" and recommends that people consider CLEP or TECEP exams.

As for the technical writing requirement specific to your degree, the DSST defaults to ENG-201 so that at least works out. I'm not an expert on Penn Foster so someone else can probably answer what that transfers in as.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
