TESC BA in Economics Exam Plan

Hello all. My first post.

I am getting ready to enroll in TESC aiming for BA in Economics and have been trying to compose an exam plan for that degree. The main question is what do I substitude the area of study exams with? I could only find CLEPs for Macroeconomics (CLEP ECO-111-CE Principles of Macroeconomics) and Microeconomics (CLEP ECO-112-CE Principles of Microeconomics). Here is what is left:

-Intermediate Macro[Economics]
-Intermediate Micro[Economics]
-Advances Economic Theory OR Advanced Seminar in Economics OR History of Economic Thought
-Economics Electives (15 credits)

So can I substitute the above exams with CLEP/DSST or am I required to take those courses from TESC?

There are very few "credit by exams" (CBE) available for economics. You can take micro/macro through CLEP or Straighterline, and there is a DSST Money and Banking which TESC transcribes as ECO-332 which would be a economics electives. You may be able to have a Penn Foster course transcribed as Econ, you will need to do some research.


You will undoubtedly need to take college courses to fill in the rest. You don't need to take the courses through TESC if you can find them offered at other schools and transfer them in.

I did a quick search of the popular independent study programs offered through B&M colleges. Such as BYU, U of Idaho, etc. And economics course seem to be few and far between.

Schools with a number of undergraduate economics courses online include

• University of Massachusetts Amherst (well-known for "heterodox economics")
• Michigan State University
• Colorado State University (Colorado State University Online Plus which is part of the Fort Collins flagship)
• Oregon State University (see Economics, and also Agricultural Economics and perhaps other headings)
• Athabasca University (a public university in Canada that also holds US regional accreditation)
• Penn State University
• Ohio University
• SUNY Empire State College

At BYU, note the Independent Study course MANEC 300: ECONOMICS OF MARKET SYSTEMS. It's listed under the department heading Managerial Economics rather than Economics. I suspect TESC would accept it as an economics elective, like overlapping courses offered elsewhere as "Business Economics."

Just to put it out there, I have contacted CSU Global in regard to this option and got the following response:

Before we get into the details of our CBE program, I do want to make you aware these exams are not set up to be transferred into another schools program. They are internal exams to test out of CSU-Global classes. On the transcript they are listed as CBE exams with no grade or GPA. Most Universities will not accept these as transfer credits. You will need to check with your school first to ensure that they would accept these credits.

I have not communicated with them further or contacted TESC about this yet, but I suppose that TESC is one of those schools that do accept this as transfer credits, correct?

I do not know, but TESC normally does not have an issue with pass/fail credits or CBE. You should still ask.
