Suggestions for new Forum Ranking System?
#31
Shoto brings up a good point, and besides, I'd like to see a ranking structure that's a little more fun.

The one with sage, academic, scholar, etc. has potential, but there needs to be more distinction between the ranks I think.

My dictionary says that a sage is someone that's profoundly wise, so to me, it would make sense for that to be the highest level--unless maybe you have a "Buddha" rank above that.

The lowest rank needs to be really low--like a "Greenhorn", a "Tenderfoot", a "Neophyte", or a "Fledgeling" to pull some words out of my thesaurus.

One idea for low on the totem pole would be Pledge. These are people who have yet to qualify for their fraternity on campus.

I think your right, the different levels should have some levity to them and not be too serious.

Here we go for my proposal. Feel free to tweak it, shoot it down, or contribute a completely different set of ranks:
Newbie - 0 posts
Greenhorn - 10 posts
Contributor - 50 posts
Scholar - 100 posts
Brain - 200 posts
Sage - 400 posts
Buddha - 1000 posts

Please no-no-no-no - I certainly don't want to even be thought of as a buddha; besides - isn't that a religious figure? Sad

Keep what have now. Smile

I like Newbie, Contributor, Scholar, and Sage. Brain and Grenhorn I can live with but please, please no Buddha. Smile

This is a tough one. I hope we don't go to a new method too soon so I can be a Lord for a little longer (!)...but I basically like the direction. I just can't come up with a complete list I like. I think all of Steve's suggestions for the first one or two levels are great and I could live with any of them ("Greenhorn", a "Tenderfoot", a "Neophyte", or a "Fledgeling") and I like Farmerboy's "Pledge" and the "Newbie" suggestion is great too. I also like "Scholar" as one of the levels. I think the top level should be "Guru." Everything in the middle is where I'm stuck. I don't like "Brain" or "Contributor." For me, that kind of stretches the concept from fun to too literal. Although I was being completely tongue-in-cheek when I wrote my post about becoming a Lord--it was kinda cool and I thought THAT was fun. I couldn't have done that if I had just become a "Brain" or a "Contributor."

I guess I like the overblown, outlandish kind of fun--along the lines of "Most Highly Exalted Grand Puba" and things like that, but we are, after all, very serious academics--one and all. Rolleyes Also, maybe we could find some fun pics/icons to go along with the titles.

So, I'll keep thinking about it but here's what I have so far:

Pledge - 10-29 posts
Greenhorn - 30-59 posts
Student - 60-149 posts
Scholar - 150-349 posts
Academic - 350-499
Professor - 500-999
Guru - 1000+

You might be able to reverse Scholar and Academic--I'm not sure which sounds more "advanced." If it's possible, it would be good to only count posts with 25 or more new characters. I also like the concept that Jennifer suggested of assigning minimum membership periods to qualify for one or more of the higher rankings. What say ye?

I like it, except I would substitute Neophyte for Greenhorn. Just my $0.02. Wink

I also don't like the idea of Buddha. Military ranks sound cool, or the less-intense education-related ones. I don't like the idea of only counting posts with 25 or more characters, or minimum memebership periods for higher ranks.
Sorry, it just makes it seem to complicated and competitive.

I'm going to sound like the dork here, but most new people ask what the titles mean under their names....so I vote that it be a little more intuitive than it is presently.
I'll confess I was probably here 6 months before I ever even noticed I had a rank of some kind, let alone what it meant.
Also, once I noticed it- there was no where that I could find out what it meant....so maybe "the list" should appear somewhere in a FAQ.

Whatever you decide is fine by me, I'm just here for the free food.
