I think this is new because I've never noticed it before. Straighterline offers standalone labs for General Chemistry I and Introduction to Biology.
Online Science Courses for College Credit Transfer | StraighterLine
It looks like they are no longer offering the labs with those two courses, so it's more expensive. Even though the lab is only 1 credit, you still have to pay the full $49.

I think you're right that this is new. They used to split it up 3 or 4, but actually this is a MUCH nicer way to offer it I think.

It's nice for me if I ever want to go back and get lab credits. I already passed the CLEP for biology. While I've seen many community colleges give lab credit for the science CLEPs, the Big 3 do not. It is more expensive for those who need to earn all 4 credits. If Straighterline starts offering Intro to Biology II, I'm all set for the ASNSM in Biology at TESC after a few more tests.

YES! I have 1/2 B&M classes and 1/2 Excelsiorâ¦this is awesome news for me! If I have to take Chem or A&P all the way through AGAINâ¦I think I'll scream. Honestlyâ¦I think I could TEACH any of these classes after the duplication of times I have had to take these courses! (I took them in HS, then in College, then in LPN school (a paired down version), then again for Excelsior!). If I have to transfer into a Medical Universityâ¦many still require yada, yada Science Class "with Lab". It's so annoying because the amount of times you have to take this course if you 'work you way up from the bottom' is ridiculous. I love this lab only option!

I wonder if that's where the other science courses are headed too. Makes me glad I took Bio when I did.

For my case, I hope they offer standalone labs for the other science courses because I would just test out of the lecture portion, but I know it'll be more expensive for people looking to earn all of their science credits through Straighterline. I think they should offer the options of taking only the lecture, lab, or the lecture and lab together.

Has anyone had any luck with transferring SL courses to a traditional university?

You have to be VERY CAREFUL when you use SL. They have a list on their site of schools that will take their courses (partner schools) and beyond that you're rolling the dice. Frankly, I think it's a long shot.

Besides the partner colleges which guarantee transfer credits for certain SL courses, colleges that are open to accepting ACE credits might accept SL courses. You just have to get them approved ahead of time. There are a lot of schools that aren't SL partners, but are open to accepting ACE credits. When I was curious about transferring SL courses to Central Texas College, which is not a Straighterline partner, I just asked. I only sent a small selection of courses, but a few were pre-approved. The person responsible for evaluation never received a response from the other departments, but I didn't press it since I decided to continue on to a doctoral program.

Straighterline is now offering the labs for A&P I and II as standalone courses only. The lab kits are still hella expensive. A lab for just A&P I or just A&P II is $249. A lab kit for those who plan to take both is $389. For some of NMJC's online sciences with labs, they just tell you to go to the grocery store.
