Straighterline Lab question
#1
Hello everyone! I'm in the process of enrolling in my first Straighterline course. I'm eyeing up Anatomy and Physiology w/Lab. I'm sure some people here have taken lab courses through this program, but I'm curious as to how "mandatory" the lab kits are? Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi lox450,

I haven't taken A&P, but I did take Straighterline's General Chem w/ lab, and the lab kit was essential. I couldn't have performed the experiments without it, and Straighterline required pictures of the experiments (with lab kit components) to be uploaded as part of each lab assignment.

Just started this class and have ordered the lab kit. not a cheap way to go the class is 99.00 a month. the book if you shop was 120.00 and over 200.00 if you buy from ST. the lab kit was another 268.00 with shipping. but I need this class and will get it done.. I have taken the first Qiz without the book and got a 68% .not good.. so I am waiting for the book to arrive and will use it. they give you 40 min to take a 25 question qiz. and very doable but not a cake walk. you got to know the material. your not suppose to use the book .. .. I will update this as I get in to the corse.. I have read this is a good way to get A and p done with 4 credits in a short amount of time. .. we shall see

That's still significantly cheaper than what I paid for my online community college A&P sequence ($600 tuition twice, $270 lab pack twice, $250 digital microscope, and $300 text and lab manual).

I do wonder, if an ACE evaluated A&P has the same level of utility as an actual course (outside of the partner schools). Perhaps it's irrelevant, but the majority of people who take "that" type of science course are headed into health fields, and many programs (ie nursing) tend to be quite particular about how prereqs are met. I know it's a new course, so time will tell and we'll see if this class ends up working for prepreqs as opposed to just simply a science course fed into one of the partner schools. I'm a little skeptical to be honest.

I needed 2 biology's (1 with lab and one not)and 2 A& P's (both with labs)for my prereqs and I was told that if I don't have enough time to take them in school, I can take them online with Ocean County or SL so it does work for prereqs in my school. I ended up taking the bio CLEP last month and the one with lab I will take this summer and I took one A&P with lab last summer and another one this summer.

I like the Straighterline concept, but for now I'd have to recommend taking biology and A&P lab courses at either New Mexico Junior College or Clovis Community College since for RA credit you pay less or no more than with Straighterline. I took Gen Bio I and II, Microbiology and A&P I and II all with labs and just about every lab was completed online (only two Microbiology labs required you to use outside materials, and they were not expensive).

Yenisei....great post!! what school did you use for A&P I and II?

i'm looking at applying to a physician's assistant program that requires those courses as pre-req's for admission.

I took them via New Mexico Junior College, but have you checked to see if your prospective program will accept labs done via distance learning or if they require "butt in the seat" labs?

Just completed the corse with lab it was easy.. but yes you must buy the lab kit.. it was fun. and went fast.. just submit your work sheets and pictures and your done. the advisor told me every students data will be different as the condition for the labs differ for every lab set up.. so the really big thing is just complete the lab.. and its graded as a pass as long as it is completed.... easy peesy..

Daughter just completed Straighterline Anatomy & Physiology w/ lab Midterm exam. Despite being open book, it was still very difficult. There were only about 6 questions that were a repeat from any of the chapters 1-8 quizzes. It seemed to contain much more tedious information like choosing the part that is NOT matched with it's proper function. Overall, the course has been fairly easy, she currently has 91%. We're hoping she'll definitely enter the Final (closed book) Exam well over 70% so that the score of the exam won't really be a factor. I can't imagine her scoring well on the final with a closed book if the exam is anything like the midterm.

The lab portion is fairly easy. It has it's own quizzes. We found it best to go to the eScience website and download the most current manual since Straighterline's information is sometimes missing information (we took the time to inform straighterline of the discrepancies). We did not find any of the lab content on the midterm. It was all textbook wording. Indeed the textbook is a must. I got my daughters from amazon for less than half the cost.
Just wanted to give some feedback regarding the midterm...
