Straighterline Accounting I. (My exp so far)
#11
Well, I found the textbook used on Amazon for $28 shipped, so I gave in and ordered it. If not for the fact that I need Accounting II as well, I probably would have just toughed it out.

I was planning on taking Micro and Macro through SL, but now I think I'll just save myself the frustration and take the CLEPs. I'm good at those. Rolleyes

Sorry wasn't trying to insult you, just making the point that most of us need the textbook in order to pass the class. Most of us including me. Seriously, I took two courses with SL and used the textbook on both classes and found it to be pretty straight forward. I got thru the math in less than a week and the English in about two to two and half weeks. I found the English class to be similar to my English courses years ago at a State university. Good luck with your Accounting class and sorry about the comment (I was trying to be funny not insulting).

Heh, the un-numbered rule: "Never say you're sorry, it's a sign of weakness." Wink (It's at the end of the vid)

I wasn't insulted; you were right. I think CLEP and DSST have spoiled me. Truthfully, I've never been in a B&M classroom or really even taken an online course before. This was probably a KITA I needed before trying to tackle grad school.

The following is on a self check for straighterline....

At the beginning of the year, a business had a two-year, $2400 insurance policy on its office equipment On July 1, it purchased a three year, $3600 policy on a newly constructed building. Which of the following will e the December 31, year-end adjusting entry?

1) Insurance expense, debit $6000, prepaid insurance, credit $6000

2) Insurance expense, debit $1800, prepaid insurance, credit $1800

The answer is the second one....I have no idea where they got the $1800 from. Can someone please explain this problem to me?

......I am getting real discouraged as they will re bill me for this class on Thursday and I am not close to being done with it, yet....

One year's worth of a $2400, two year policy is $1200. 6 months' worth of a $3600, three year policy is $600. (3600/3 years, divided again by 2).

$1200 + $600 = $1800.

It would probably be helpful if they specified what exactly we were making the adjusting entry for, instead of just assuming we know they want total insurance payable. It's things like that that annoy me with SL.

Here's an email I got back from my SL advisor.

Quote:McGraw Hill is the provider of the lesson presentations. We have contacted them a number of times with errors and asking them to fix the lessons. However, we have not gotten much response from them. My advice is to focus on the reading assignments from the textbook. Your quizz and exam questions come from the reading material. The lesson presentations are just supplemental.

Ugh. Well there you have it: we need the textbook for this, unless Lady Luck happens to be your friend with benefits.

No one has told me but with SL can you take as many assessments as you want like ALEKS to pass ?
Or do you have to go through entire modules of their course?
I see you said you passed in a week Micro and Macro. Was that through assessments if so how many are you allowed, etc?
Thanks

HI NJ,

Straighterline is set up more like a regular class then Aleks. By that I mean you only get one attempt at each graded quiz/ graded exam and each is counted toward your final points total.

For an example of how the courses work see the syllabus for Accounting 1 :
Online College Courses Distance Learning Courses

I believe you could just take the quizzes & exams and not have to review the modules. Prior to being ACE reviewed that made no sense as you were trying to obtain the highest score possible as you would get a letter grade through one of the Partner colleges.

But I think being ACE reviewed , you will only need a 70% to get the ACE credit and since it is not going to have a letter grade, I think shortcuts could be taken if the goal is just getting the credits and if you are choosing to get them on an ACE transcript rather then on a Partner college transcript.

Unlike Aleks, where you could stop once you hit 70% , I think with Straighterline you will have to complete the entire course to arrive at your final percentage.

Yet , I do wonder if a case could be made, for people getting ACE credit, that once you reach the number of points that equal 70 % ( for example in the case of Accounting 1 it would be 602 points), if you could take zero's in the remaining quizzes & exams.

NJ, in regards to your question in another post about if I will be staying around, I plan to be here at least until I figure out my future plans regarding grad school.
