Straighter Line Tips
#1
Hi,
My name is Zach, and I'm attempting to get a BSBA Computer Information Systems from TESU. I have been using clep and dsst to test out of a few credits. I decided today to try my hand at a StraighterLine course.... Terrible idea. I have no idea what to do. I signed up to take the business law course (BUS110), and its kicking my butt. I attempted the first quiz with the prior knowledge that I could retake it after 24 hours just to see what the format was. I got a 56% which isn't surprising. However, I studied for the second quiz and took notes on every term from the portal lessons. Took the quiz and there were questions that weren't even covered by SL. I got a 46! I actually studied and got 10 points lower. The material simply wasn't covered in the lessons.

What do i do? I've got to be missing something?!?!?

thank you in advance for any help regarding this issue.

I think the business law class was supposedly one of the harder classes for straighterline as its not a direct copy and paste question and answer type of quizes but were more of testing the understanding of the different concepts and applying them directly to the questions and having to take out the wrong answers from the question and then further narrow it down.

It wasn't even asking for application of concepts though. The 2nd unit was on fraud and then on this quiz for that unit it started asking about the UCC which is completely unrelated information than what was shown in the study portal.

The business law class is the hardest of the SL business courses. Try not to get too frustrated. There are other options if you don't like this class in the SL format. I would say don't let this particular class discourage you from SL in general, as it's not a good representation of the quality of courses.

Zach,
I will be taking this course, and a few more in two weeks after my 7 SL courses are completed, I'm almost done...
I'm not sure if I recall that course if it's open book exam or not for the final. Do you also have the etextbook?

See below for something you can try for the next exam, maybe have your etextbook and the course materials for review handy.

I hope these steps will work for me in the future Business Law course, if not, I'll see if Saylor or Study.com has similar materials.

For the ones who have taken Business Law, are the majority of the questions based on the text or the course readings?
I usually skim through the course readings for SL, and during the open book exams, search the text for further info.
Is there another better way to research the topics other than using Saylor/Study.com or another OER course provider?

I did get the E-textbook. I'm trying not to get discouraged because I need like 5 classes from SL including this one. I'm just frustrated because I studied the material it showed and then it put completely new information on the test.

The questions are based on the text, but they require more than a skim for this class. I had to actually read the book for this one (and search it again when taking the test).

I took this course a few weeks back and it was a tough one. I was constantly going back to search for answers on the ebook. The final exam is open book, scored an 82% on the final. You have to search and search the ebook for the answers. Do not get frustrated with it. You can also go through Saylor's Business Law & Ethics. It did help me understand some of the contents. Good luck.

Thank you both, I was thinking along those lines. I am just lucky that the course is still open book and I will go through the etextbook more carefully than my previous open book or closed book exam courses from Straighterline. The majority of the time, with the exception of the two Acrobatiq courses, I can do really well before getting to the proctored final exam... I hope the remaining courses that I take will be the same.
