Spanish I on Sophia
#1
This class is killing me.

Does anyone have any advice on third-party apps, websites, YouTube channel, etc. to help me get a more immersive experience in Spanish. I have no opportunity to talk to anybody in this language and I refuse to crash and burn in this class.

I am trying to get another chunk of credit transfers before oct start date at UMPI. Unfortunately, for me, this is not a class I can blast through.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Basically... Your only other options are CLEP, Study.com, or if you know another language, ACTFL exam... If you need extra help with the language, you can try using the Modern States CLEP/AP options for extra practice. Then there are the extra material from the online resources at the library, be it audiobooks or DVD's, videos, etc, your other option would be YouTube and other Spanish video resources...

I just downloaded Babbel and purchased a one month subscription. If I take some time with it, it will probably work out.

Kind of a related question - If I drop Spanish, can I restart from the beginning in a month?

Don't drop it, you can continue where you left off in the next month subscription, you can have two classes open at any time. Have another class open for another subject area if you need to... Your progress is kept if you don't drop the class, you can continuously work on a second class and complete them if you need to delay the Spanish I class.

Just talk to ChatGPT.

"Hi, I am learning Spanish. Please talk to me only in basic Spanish (no English at all) and I will be responding in Spanish too as much as I can. Please correct my sentences in case I make some blatant mistakes".

Reddit.  r/Spanish is great.  if you're using google, you can r click and translate to English things you don't understand but don't want to ask.  Of course, it's Reddit so it's okay to ask!

Lingo Mastery is also good.   https://www.lingomastery.com/about/

Listen to Spanish music.

Are you sure you don't have opportunities to talk to anyone in Spanish?  If you're in the US, practically every restaurant has native Spanish speakers working there.  For small amounts of $, you can likely arrange to bring your homework/list of Spanish questions/stuff you need to learn and sit in the restaurant with one or more Spanish speakers to help you.  Source:  I manage a restaurant.  Between 2pm and 4pm is usually best, day shift is leaving and night shift is arriving.  You might make some new friends! P.S. Fast food restaurants and Mexican restaurants are where you should start.

Please keep going!  You're about to have a breakthrough, I promise.

And remember you're working towards a Pass (70%) only, any grade higher makes no difference; as it will have no impact on your GPA.

Language Transfer is pretty thorough on grammar, leaving vocab mostly up to listeners to find on their own. It's free and I found it incredibly helpful, even after 3 years of high school Spanish, 1 semester in college, and 3 months of intensive (15 hours/week, one-to-one) courses in a Spanish-only country. I highly recommend it! You can download the audio lessons to your phone, too.
Current Goal:
UMPI: B.L.S. with minor in Educational Studies

I'm 75% through my degree!

Earned:  91 credits total
RA: 3 credits
Sophia: 76 credits
Study.com: 6 credits
UMPI: 6 credits

Good reminder. I always think less than 95% = hot garbage lol.

Hola, David.

I suggest you check if you can find an audio course called pimleur in a library. They are great for pronunciation and getting confortable talking in the target language. It is also available at audible, for about 15 dollars for 5 lessons. It's very basic, but you will remember those lessons very well.
You can also try a book called assimil, where you have a short lesson to study every day, and audios to follow. It's very effective for any language.
Finally, you can try to listen to news radios in Spanish in your commute.
