Sociology help?
#1
Hi all, I'm getting ready for the sociology CLEP and have been spending a lot of time on the specific feedback thread. I have the terms and theories down but I'm stuck on demographics. A ton of posters mentioned specific demographic info (percentages of certain ethnicities growing or declining and some divorce stats.) Does anyone know of any online resources for this? I tried googling for census info by can't seem to find the right stats. The divorce searches mainly come up with magazine articles and such. Any help is much appreciated.

Personally, I didn't find a site that conveniently listed all the necessary demographics. Even if I had found such a site, it would have been extremely difficult to weed through all of the unnecessary statistics. Here are some demographics you should know:

~Women earn more bachelor’s degree than men
~Race declining by 2050 –Non-Hispanic Whites
~Percent of Upper class (1%-2% [up to 6% in some studies])
~Income after divorce by gender - increase, decrease or same? (men = up, women = down)
~U.S. Demographic growing fastest - 65+
~Most people in poverty
~24% of children are below the poverty line (age group w/highest poverty)
~Women earnings that were about 72 percent of the earnings of males
~Cardiovascular diseases account for most deaths (17 million), followed by cancers (7.6 million), respiratory diseases (4.2 million), and diabetes (1.3 million)
~Poverty rate in U.S. = 12-15%

There weren't a lot of questions on this, so don't overstudy it! By trying to remember to many percentile numbers, you may get confused and mix up the facts. Good luck on your exam! Big Grin

Thank you so much; that was so helpful! It seems like theres one version of the exam thats really heavy on the demographics - I'm terrified of getting that one!
