My daughter just took her second and final CLEP before starting at SDSU on Monday (tomorrow). She passed the College Algebra CLEP with a 66 a few weeks ago, though she had already learned virtually all of the material covered and just required some tutoring to get her back up to speed.
The Sociology CLEP was the first CLEP she has taken where she had to try to learn material from scratch and, to be honest, it wasnât pretty. I told her that two weeks of two hours a day should be enough to pass. She procrastinated and procrastinated until we were down to one week. I still wanted her to try though so she started watching the Sociology videos at Take Free Online Courses. Earn College Credit. Research Schools, Degrees & Careers. At this point, the Sociology videos are 74% complete and she was able to watch probably 90% of them.
Her study method was dramatically different than any other Iâve observed or practiced. Despite being a straight A student throughout high school, her ability to focus in her last week before going away to college was almost none. Actually, her study appeared to consist of text messaging her boyfriend with the occasional video thrown in there. She âstudiedâ for many hours on several of those days but her progression through the videos was positively glacial. With three days to go she was not quite half way through. I believe, however, that she was completely current on her text messaging.
In my last great act of academic support I created flashcards for her based on one of the most recent posts in the specific feedback section and told her to learn that and finish the videos. She did that and took the official CLEP practice test as well as all the little free Sociology CLEP practice tests and scored 60% or better on all of them.
She took the test at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and came away with a 54. She passed--by a pretty thin margin. According to her the test was âreally hardâ and she guessed on a lot of the questions. NOT surprising... Iâll leave what little info I got from her in the specific exam feedback section, but we are all relieved it is over.
She has the potential to take ten (10) CLEP exams and graduate in three years and save tens of thousands of dollars--but that doesnât yet seem to be motivating her. Instead, her motivation was three-day weekends. You see, originally her counselor signed her up for Sociology and it was a MWF class. She wanted to pass this test so she could have Fridays off--and now she does.
Iâm hoping that her first semester of college will give her some perspective and she will be a little more motivated to knock out the next eight. Stay tuned...
