Second Capstone?
#1
This won't really apply to me since I am doing the BSBA but I'm curious. If someone gets a BA in whatever and does the Capstone course and then comes back a year later for a second BA...do they have to do the same Capstone course all over again? Could they just pay for the course if it's mandatory and submit the same work since you can't plagerize yourself? How does that work?

Not certain about the rest, but this is incorrect. You can, most assuredly, plagiarize yourself. Resubmitting a written work twice would actually make your second submission 100% plagiarized and would likely be flagged in the system.

You'd be better off not submitting it twice there. But I'm sure you can get away with it at another school.

Yea I wasn't as worried about that part. IF I do another degree, I will need to do a new Capstone no matter what since I am taking the Business TECEP. I was just wondering if you need to do the same course over again for people that get two BAs.

Most institutions and individual professors use TurnItIn these days. If you've submitted it before (or if someone else has), even at a different school, you're likely to get caught.

One mention on Turnitin & self-plagiarism with WGU. I turned in two papers for (of all classes) Ethical Leadership. Scored my averaged Turnitin scores of 2-5% (fun game chasing 0% but references gets me sometimes!!) WGU emailed over the weekend and informed me there was an error in the system and I would need to resubmit my papers. I did and was eager to check my Turnitin scores - both papers had 100% Plagerism. Even though I knew it was me I did not like seeing that Wink WGU told me not to worry that they would handle it on their end. Both papers passed so all was well in the world.

Turnitin is supposed to "purge" your previous submission after 24 hours. That is why you can't resubmit a paper for a day or two afterwards. I'm guessing they had some kind of issue on their end and that this isn't typical.

Personally, it seems ridiculous to have to take two capstone courses when you are within the same school (Heavin if its TESU). Your paper can be on anything no matter if your major is English or History or Liberal Studies. But I think I've heard TESU wants you to re-take it again - I'm not sure on that. What with the residency waiver possibly applying again and possibly having to take this course again I would just prefer to put that money into a Master's program vs. dropping another 4k on an additional 24 AOS credits, a capstone, residency waiver, grad fee etc.

Do we know for sure that you have to do the capstone twice? I thought it was previously confirmed that you do not, if you have previously done it. You just need the new minimum credits in the new AOS.

Good experiment! I had a similar issue back when Turnitin was new - I think I wrote about it here. I had a teacher account, so I ran my paper through it to check it out, see how it worked, etc before turning my paper for my actual class (where I was a student). When I turned it in for real it was flagged because it was already in the system! Lesson learned!

Edit to add: You can ask if you can recycle a previous paper, if they say no, then it's a no- if they don't care, then go for it. It's not a case of plagiarism, which is when you use someone's ideas as your own- in this case you're using your own ideas more than once- it's a matter of obligation to produce new work for the new teacher, not a case of an ethical or legal infringement. If you are a researcher or conducted research, you would have to site that as a source as if it weren't your own, but that's not really what you asked.

The TESU lib arts capstone uses turnitin. If you recycle a paper you submitted to turnitin at any school no matter how long ago, you are going to get flagged for plagiarism.

You have to take the lib arts capstone again even if you took it before with your previous TESU BA. It will state that in your eval. Here is the blurb from my eval I saved before they deleted it after graduation:

SECOND BACCALAUREATE DEGREE (PLEASE READ DEGREE RQMT INFO BELOW) Students who wish to earn a second baccalaureate degree must complete a minimum of 24 additional credits in the area of study/core beyond the date the most recent degree was completed. Courses completed beyond the date all prior degrees were completed will be labeled as "NEW". Capstone courses can be considered as 3 NEW credits under this policy. The University will not award a third baccalaureate degree. Graduates of TESU who are returning for a second degree should note that the capstone courses LIB*495 (for the TESU BA degrees) and APS*401 (for certain BSAST degrees) are degree* specific and therefore will have to be retaken and will count towards the required NEW credit.

Based on University policy, all general education requirements, other than those labeled as "DEGREE REQUIREMENT" will be satisfied based on the completion of a first bachelor's degree from a regionally *accredited US institution. Adjustments to the evaluation will be made to reflect this once all transcripts have been received. Our records indicate that you earned a Bachelor of Arts in [...] from [...] on [...].
