Can anyone describe the final exam details for Saylor courses? Specifically is the Corpoprate Communications final exam open book or are notes permitted like SL?

Also, can you take the non-proctored final as practice then take the proctored exam for credit?

Yes you can take the non-proctored final first as practice. I do not know if notes are permitted for the proctored final.

I'm going to bump this for my own curiosity....anyone have input on Saylor final exams?

I attempted Corportate Communications thru Saylor, and since I could not find a local proctor, used the webcam ProctocU service. No notes were allowed, and it was not open book.

The practice exams/quizzes did not have ANY repeated questions compared to the actual final.

Frustrated, I ultimately took the ECE Workplace Communication /w Computers and found it much easier.

I was going to take with Saylor but couldn't find an answer to most of the questions I had regarding testing etc. ultimately I decided to take it with Straighterline and had a very good experience. The SL course consisted of 14 chapter quizzes, a midterm, 3 papers (one 1 page letter, one 2 page coversheet and resume and one 1500 word report) and the final. The final had to be procotored using proctor U. all the test and exams were open book with 1 page of handwritten notes allowed.

I was able to finish the SL class in 5 days with a "B" with minimal study or reading. My only criticism is that some of the exam questions are not direct from the text book. You have to deduce some of the answers by building on what you read, in other words, the book may give you a minimal explanation for something and then you have to infer the next step or solution. some of the questions/material is common sense, some is covered in a normal speech class and in IC through organizational behavior, principles of management or human resource management. Even so I wouldn't recommend the class without using the textbook.

In general I didn't like the book very much for the reasons above (especially the ebook). I used an ebook from Chegg and the ereader interface is a bit clunky and the search filter returns everything making it harder to find what you are looking for. Further the books glossary, in my opinion, isn't very good. Oh and 1 more frustrating thing -using the search function returns the page numbers in roman numerals but the book has normal page numbers! Search for something like "communication channel" and it says page cccxxvi instead of page 326!!!

Having said that I do recommend the SL course and think it is an efficient, inexpensive way to finish the class quickly with minimal writing etc.

I'm doing the Straighterline course now. As the above poster said, it's probably the quickest and easiest of the routes and you will be able to complete a large percentage of the questions using common sense if you've ever worked in an office. Compared to other Straighterline courses the textbook content doesn't align that well with the course content, but I've managed to get 100% on the first 3 tests with minimal effort.

ECE is far faster than Straighterline course.

Practice exam has many of the same questions as the actual. $95 ECE. Highly recommended.

Are the ECE exam text books are expensive?

The practice test was $25.

More sample questions and topic outlines are here. I didn't feel a textbook was needed. Pretty basic stuff.
