Does anyone know any better ways to study for the saylor exams? The textbook is killing me with the constant reading...is there any better way to help retain the information besides reading for 16 hours per unit ?

This has been the main complaint with Saylor, and why most people don't stick with it (at least on this forum, and I'm thinking that we have more fortitude than most people).
My advice; pay $25, take the exam, and if you pass, you're done. If you don't, you at least know where to start with your studying. Other options: 1) you can join InstantCert and just study for the CLEP, and then take the Saylor exam after that as well, or 2) you can buy a cheap used textbook and study that way.

Saylor exams are just that, you get credit for the proctored final exam
You can think of it as a different CLEP/DSST or even a TECEP
This is what I recommend: Review the table of contents from Saylor course
Grab a textbook from the library and review the same details
Enter your own Coles Notes version of the details you're studying for review
One thing I do is, create a second Saylor account for practice final exam.
This is because, if you fail the practice exam, you have to wait 14 days for the proctored final, it hinders your speed.
And the second reason is, it will tell you what you need work on, you're familiar with possible questions for final.
Note: The practice final questions are not going to be identical to the proctored final.
Having a second account isn't cheating and it's giving you an extra practice set to "gauge" where you're at.
Hope this helps, more practice testing is where it's all at to pass any proctored exam.
Example: TECEP for Network Technology actually uses the Saylor Course as a free resource.
I'll use the Saylor course for review, but will use a Network+ study guide for good measure.
Your final option is taking another course at Straighterline for $49 if it's more suited for you.
It's a quick set of work and then the final exam, mainly 80% work/20% exam.
People like this as they can "pass" the course with high grades for coursework, and mediocre final.
If you're taking Straighterline courses, cram as much as you can in a month.

As someone planning on taking two courses through Saylor, I found this post really helpful. Thanks!

^^ This is good advice, although I will add that you should at least skim Saylorâs textbook. I remember having questions on the final that were quite specific to Saylorâs content. Using entirely outside resources is not something I would suggest. Most of the videos in Saylor courses can be âskimmedâ as well by changing the speed to 1.5x or 2x.

I'm one of them, though I've only had one mediocre final so far, most of them I've done nearly as well on the final as on the rest of the course. There's no need to cram though, if you mean the studying type of cram. Nearly all of the SL exams, including the proctored finals, are open note *and* open book. It's only thanks to that policy with SL that I've been able to progress as fast as I have.
On the other hand, when the finals are done, a week or two later I'm remembering next to nothing. This is not the right approach for someone who actually needs to retain the information, but thankfully, I don't.

At least 19 or more SL courses are now closed book. Some were just changed at the end of January.

Simple solution is to focus hard on the coursework and get the best grades possible.
But obviously try to get higher grades on the proctored final as possible.
I agree with previous poster for Saylor courses, you need to skim through them.
I would just use the practice test to assess my current knowledge and work on it.

Even so, if the pre-final exams for those are still open book then it remains a pretty easy route.
