Hi,
Newbie here--homeschooling mom to a teen girl.

eeya: She just finished her 9th grade studies--one of which was biology. We have been thinking about her taking the biology CLEP for the past few months. She really wants to gain some college credit for the work she's doing in high school. I wasn't sure whether her biology curriculum would prepare her for the CLEP, but she just took an REA practice test and her scaled score was 70, so I signed her up to take it next month! I'll have her review using her text, the REA book, the Biology Smart book, take some more practice tests and other resources we have.
She is very excited and so am I!

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Do you have a school in mind for reporting the scores? Typically schools don't keep score reports for very long if the student isn't in their student records system. Some community colleges with open enrollment will let a high school student apply and get entered into the student records database even though they aren't cleared to register for classes.

College Board (CLEP) will hold the scores for 20 years and she can add to that record as she goes along. When she is ready that transcript with all her earned credit can be sent anywhere for $20.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Transcript expenses matter to me. We didn't think my son would go to the community college, but we had him apply to the community college and had all scores reported to them just in case. When he ended up enrolling at the c.c., we didn't have transcript expenses for CLEP ($20) and DSST ($30) because the school had the scores on file. For some people, reporting scores somewhere instead of nowhere in the hopes of later avoiding transcript fees isn't worth the trouble. For other people, spending a few minutes to maybe save $50 down the round is time well spent.

One of the dirty secrets of American education is the tremendous overlap between what students study in high school and the general education courses they take their first two years of college. She should double dip as much as her spongy young brain will allow.

I agree. And great job Mom for considering the CLEP after her class instead of as a replacement for a class. (that's trendy lately in homeschool groups, not sure what's up with that...)

What's up with that? Maybe it has something to do with a certain someone who posts blurbs such as: Learning always trumps credit earning. ;-)
My daughter has been homeschooled from day 1, is a self-motivated student and would like to limit the amount of time she has to sit in a classroom. She's been looking at her options for post-high school education. Various organizations are out there to help a student gain college credit through CLEP. I entertained the idea of such a service b/c of the mentoring aspect--until I dug deep and realized the mentors were mostly graduates of the organization and too young and inexperienced for my tastes. Plus the issue of the co$t for such a service.
Then we came across your book "Homeschooling for College Credit" sometime over the past 6 months. A bright light bulb came on as I devoured that book. My daughter read every single page. So, I dedicate my daughter's first CLEP exam to you, Jennifer, b/c you are the one who inspired us to journey down this road. :hurray:
I don't have a FB account so I can't post on your FB page, but I read it almost daily. Honestly, you are amazing--all the helpful information and inspiration you provide to your followers is incredible. You discover a new resource and seem so excited to share it with everyone. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I so appreciate you!
God bless!

Yes, isn't that something? It isn't enough that many schools ruin a student's curiosity and love for learning. Then college forces them to re-live many of the classes. Unless students have gone the AP route. The system is such a mess, imnsho.

Right now my DD is trying to accumulate credit towards her general ed courses and then submit them to somewhere like Charter Oak or Thomas Edison. We're still in the early stages of all of this, though.
