Ready to Test?
#1
My 16y/o *seems* ready for his next CLEP that we scheduled for Friday, but I just wanted to check with the resident experts to see what you think. He took Psychology for a year, and then scored 67% on the CollegeBoard practice test, and 60%, 62%, and 59% on the Peterson's. It seems like that would mean he's ready based on what I've read on this site, but for his two prior CLEPs he really had to study a lot, and this one has been virtually no studying, so I'm a bit unsure. Thanks so much for you thoughts.

He's probably there - I'd still cram a bit until test day, but that's just me! Good luck to him!!

Not far off, I'd have him brush up on terms from now until the test. I remember my test was very term heavy, and had a lot of questions on the Central Nervous System and its branches. Was the only CLEP test that I knew I was going to pass when I was about half way in. At least my test seemed very term heavy.

Thanks! He studied all day today, and re-took the CLEP practice test, only improving his score by one point to a 68%. He never checked his wrong answers after the first time taking it because I wanted him to take it fresh again after taking all three Peterson's tests and checking those answers. This afternoon, he was able to check both of his practice CLEP wrong answers and hopefully retain some of that information. We shall see. Test is tomorrow at 9am.

Let's play "guess his score!" (don't tell him that!! No pressure!!) But I am guessing he'll land a 60. I hope I'm not totally wrong lol!

Only a 54! BUT, a pass is a pass! Smile I mostly just use the CLEP to corroborate the grades on my transcript because he homeschools. Colleges know that I can give him whatever grade I want, but I think it's good for them to see that he actually learned the material and earned his grade. Thanks again for your feedback!

I can argue that a 54 is better than a 74. A 74 indicates far more time than was necessary was spent preparing. A 54 indicates just enough time was spent freeing up time to be spent studying for another test. Of course, if you really need to know the material, a 74 is better. If it is a general education requirement in a subject that you have no interest in, a pass is a pass.

Let's discuss guessing. If you have no idea which answer is correct on a real test, guess. You might get lucky. It could make the difference between passing and not passing. For a practice test, don't guess. If you have no idea what the answer is, don't answer. If you're not highly confident of the answer on a practice test, you should leave it blank. The purpose of a practice test isn't the ego gratification of how smart you are. The real value of a practice test is identifying what you don't know. I personally take it a step further. If I know the answer on a practice test, but can't explain why one of the wrong answers is wrong, I leave the question unanswered. Use the practice tests to identify gaps in your knowledge.
63 CLEP Sociology

54 CLEP Chemistry
77 CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications

He thought it was easier than Biology and US History I. He read a Psychology book during the course of this year, and then studied for the CLEP by watching the Crash Course videos on Youtube (his favorite for CLEP studying). Good luck to you!
