REA CLEP review book wrong edition
#11
rcst0kes Wrote:I don't think I will be purchasing used from Amazon anymore. I was looking for the newest edition but I guess since the ISBN is the same the "Amazon seller" sent me this crap.

I learned my lesson. If anyone has one (either REA or the official) they would like to sell/trade me, please pm me!

This isbn isn't the same. When you sell, sites like ebay or amazon have a feature that lets you access prefilled data. It makes listing your book super fast- rather than typing it all out and taking pics. I use that feature often. HOWEVER, sometime, the seller (like in your case) selected the wrong pre-filled info. Clearly, they picked a newer edition thus the amazon database entered the newer edition's isbn. Had your seller compared isbn numbers, he would have noticed the difference. Demand a refund- you'll get it.
Also, this isn't really an amazon used issue- it's just a case of either lazy seller (check feedback first) or an accident. Accidents happen. I accidentally sold a wrong edition once, it happens.
Another thing- sometimes prefilled info is only available for new editions, but sellers use it anyway. In that case, they would say in the description that the edition is not what is shown. So, you do have to read the description, not just look at the photo.

Personally, I wouldn't buy from someone who doesn't have 100% + feedback. I know for me, I work very hard to keep my 100% rating- and that means giving refunds to keep people happy when there is a problem. If your seller has 100% + the last thing he wants is a negative feedback from you. If you bought from someone with less than 100, well.......you may be stuck because this seller doesn't care if you give negative feedback.

It just takes some time to learn the ropes of smart online buying, in the scope of things, this was probably an excellent (and cheap) learning experience!

If I recall correctly, this was an unusual situation at Amazon where they had the correct ISBN and wrong publishing date (1998). Check the page you ordered from for the date.

I ended up buying the set from REA for $50 (?) to be sure I got the latest edition.

Again, stand-alones may be a better option, especially any, like Natural Science, which have been revised since 2007.

Exactly so. Sometimes it doesn't matter (I got the English TER release rather than the American Sony release of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera -- no biggie), but when it does, sellers are almost always gracious in providing a refund (that has been my experience).

And then there's that person who gives you neutral feedback without contacting you. Sad

Wise words. I've learned a lot from my mom's experiences (she's been shopping online since ~1998) in addition to my own. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes an excellent way to buy things at a discount.

So here's the Used list of books from Amazon.

Amazon.com: Used and New: CLEP General Exam (REA) -The Best Exam Review for the CLEP General (Test Preps)

The one I bought was the one from BetterWorldBooks (96%positive).

This list has 25 sellers on the first page that all advertise the same product. However, only one of them mentions anything about which edition it is.

I hardly think it was my fault for assuming the edition advertised would be the one I receive. I would have no idea what edition I would get from ordering any of the other ones without contacting each seller individually.

From now on, I'll look at the price. If it's too good to be true...it is. :o

I've gotten lots of used books (but not many used study guides) from Amazon, too, and it usually works out fine.

If you click on "return to product information" at the top of the Amazon page. Then scroll down to "Product Details". It says 1998. That certainly is not obvious, but when I noticed it, that was enough to scare me away.

I just looked at REA and can only find the book (Preparation) with all of the practice exams. (We'll have to keep an eye on that. Maybe they are switching to only offering stand-alone guides. I wonder if this is because the English exams are changing this summer.)

Let me look at my books for the ISBNs. If they are different on the books, then that would give you something to work with to find the book you wanted. I'll add it to this post.

Review: ISBN-10: 0878919007 and ISBN-13: 978-0878919000 (same as Amazon) Sorry. That does not help.
Preparation: ISBN-10: 0878919015

It's ok. Thank all of you for your help though.

I'll be studying with textbooks and I think what I have gives me a good idea of what I need.

As long as I over study I think ill be fine. I will invest in the official book for the practice exams.
