REA CLEP review book wrong edition
#1
Hey guys, I need some help...

I bought a CLEP general subject review guide (REA) from an amazon seller and the one they sent me is an older one (I think 98).

Have the exams changed at all that this would be an issue?

Also, have the books changed significantly enough for me to want the newer one?

Thanks for all your help in the past, and in the future!

Probably not. College Board isn't notable for extreme change. I use an REA Guide for the General CLEPs (practice exams only) that uses the old three-digit scoring system. I found them to be a bit harder than the real tests, which is a good thing in my viewpoint. Not sure if the REA book with the study materials has changed much. Doubtful, but possible.

I'd say: use IC and the book you have and you'll be fine! Perhaps other IC-ers will have an answer more categorically accurate than my own...

THe official CLEP review books are from CollegeBoard not REA. What did you pay for this? I have the 18th addition of the Official and the 16th addition they are the same, I would just think a 12 year old one would be pretty out of date. Check your local library for a newer addition.

If I'm not mistaken, the collegeboard review book only contains sample Q and A. I was really looking for review material to compliment text books.

I only paid a couple bucks for it. It's too bad though, Amazon shows a picture of the newest one but there is no where to find out which edition your actually getting when you get it used.

I cant imagine history or science changing that much in 12 years...anything that would change in humanities I would have been around for :p .

Links Try this link. then scroll down to testing and Education. it will take you to the free Peterson test a great resource. Humanities will not have changed, but trust me Science has changed in 12 years.

ehhh. I'm not loving what you bought. For starters, it's only going to have 5 exams in it, and while I love REA, I only love REA for subject tests. 98 is kinda old. How about you return it and get a credit- if they advertised the wrong edition there should be no question.
With your credit, buy the College Board Official CLEP Guide anything 2005 or newer. It will be well under $20 and have EVERYTHING you need as far as break downs- and you'll get mini practice tests too.

What changes is what you are asked. I'll make up an example. Let's say you are taking the Natural Science exam. In one edition, it states that 50% of the exam will consist of biology. If that's true, clearly biology would get the bulk of your study time. What if a newer edition only includes 25% biology. As you can see, that would change things for your study plan.

But, yes, REA books are excellent teaching tools. So are the Idiot Guides, Sparks, Dummies, etc. I almost always choose REA, and you can sometimes find these at your library. (I love free!)

Hi!

Definitely get an official CLEP guide. It is the most important reference when studying for CLEP exams.

You can use the official CLEP website to compare the current exam breakdowns to your 1998 book:

CLEP: Exam Descriptions

This book (The Best REVIEW) has a companion called The Best Test PREPARATION which has practice exams:

http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...exams.html

I used the 2007 version of these REA guides for 2 exams - Natural Science and College Math. I am undecided as to whether the stand-alone versions would have been a better choice. (I have seen that the new Natural Science guide is highly recommended.)

I also supplemented with the Peterson's CLEP Success ebook, which would give you another point of comparison:

Here is my feedback:

Natural Science (scroll down past Biology) - http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...#post67426

College Math - http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...#post75629

I hope this helps!

I'm agreed that you shouldn't have a problem getting a refund for it.

I went and looked at my old guide: it's from 2004, which is quite a bit newer than 1998. The oldest REA guide I've used is probably the one for Sociology, which came from 2001 if I remember correctly. (It's best from the practice tests anyway.)

I think the CLEP Official Guide is overrated. I mean, it's nice to have an extra mini practice test -- and for all 34-odd CLEPs -- but that's about all you get. It looks like you can get the 2005 guide for $0.01 plus $3.99 shipping, so I guess it would be worth that much! (The 2006 guide, the one I own, is only 62 cents more expensive.)

I don't think I will be purchasing used from Amazon anymore. I was looking for the newest edition but I guess since the ISBN is the same the "Amazon seller" sent me this crap.

I learned my lesson. If anyone has one (either REA or the official) they would like to sell/trade me, please pm me!
