Questions about tentative UMPI degree plan
#1
Hello All, I attempted to upload a Google sheet of a tentative degree plan for UMPI. Right now my daughter has about 62 transferrable credits from the Associate degree she earned from the Virginia Community College System. She plans on taking close to the remaining 90 transferable credits from Sophia or SDC.

Do any of you happen to know if when she applies to UMPI if she can get a degree audit for both the BABA in Business Administration and an audit also for the BLS degree with a Management minor?

I have attached a spreadsheet which contains a tab for all coursework completed from the community college. There is a tab of how she will meet gen Ed req’s by taking classes on Sophia and SDC.One tab is my attempt at what would transfer to the Business major core.

Finally, I was curious if she did the BLS Management minor how the transfer credits would look like?

Thank you for your thoughts Smile

If she's not sure if she wants the BABA or the BLS Management, I would maybe recommend applying for the BABA. Once enrolled, sign up for classes that would apply to both degrees. Then contact UMPI to ask "what if I changed to the BLS?"
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

When you apply you have to select a degree. Your degree evaluation is completed after you've been accepted into your degree program. She'd be much better offer career wise with the BABA than the BLS. She can ask her academic advisor after she's an enrolled student what a BLS plan would look like for her. The course transfer isn't going to be any different. How they can be applied to the degree may be different. Keep in mind that she'll need 24 UL credits for the BLS and most community college courses aren't UL. She won't need Study to hit 90 credits. Sophia alone handles that and she has classes from her CC.

If your daughter is young and starting out on her career now, then I highly recommend the BABA. It's just a more useful degree for someone just starting. I normally only recommend a BLS for someone who is much further along in their career, and just needs a degree to check the box.

The BABA has a ton more required courses, and very few Free Electives, while the BLS has 6-7 courses in the minor/concentration, and a ton of space for Free Electives. But that's letting the tail wag the dog, to decide based on how your credits will transfer instead of looking at what degree you're better off with.

Since you didn't put the course number, I'm going to guess that Biology of the Environment w/Lab is a Biological Science course, so you don't have a Physical Science. I also think that the LEGAL & ETHICAL ENVIRONMENT OF BUSINESS requirement is not satisfied by a Business Law course, but is by an UL Business Ethics course (based on how they bring in SDC's courses for that), so Business Law is just an elective (a bummer).

For the BABA, you need the following (assuming Sophia):
Intro to Ethics
Environmental Science or Chemistry
Sociology
Spanish
American Govt
Business Comm

That leaves you with 16 courses to take at UMPI, which is a lot. So you can decide if you want to take up to 6 courses at SDC:
BUS 303: Management Information Systems
BUS 304: Leading Organizational Change
BUS 209: Mentoring & Leadership Development in the Workplace
BUS 306: Strategic Human Resources Management
BUS 309: Digital Marketing & Advertising
BUS 307: Leadership & Organizational Behavior
BUS 312: Advanced Operations Management

These are all UL, and require at least 1 paper/project each, so it's also a lot of work, but $200 or $400 or $600 spent at SDC might save you a full $1400 term at UMPI, so it's worth thinking about.

Save Business Math and the hands-on art course for UMPI, those are probably easy A's.

@Dooj, It really depends on what your daughter is looking forward to after the UMPI degree. If she plans on going to a Masters, she basically wants to 'hit' all the entry requirements with the Bachelors. You don't really need a BABA to get into an MBA, it's all personal preference if she's only looking at a check the box degree, the BLS will do.

Again... Generally, a BABA with concentration would be better to complete than the BLS with a minor. I usually only recommend the BLS with the minor because of max transfer of credits, as 60+ can be electives, this is only for those that want a quick 'check the box' degree and don't really want a major or want to salvage their current credits.

Last but not least, if she's really wanting to do 'something else' and using this as a check the box degree, there are 60 elective credits to take 'anything', so for example, she's looking to take some environmental studies courses, or any other subject that interest her, she can use those electives for trying out different subjects of interest.

1) I was saying that the Legal Environment of Business course she took won't work for the BUS353: LEGAL & ETHICAL ENVIRONMENT OF BUSINESS requirement (it sounds like it should, but it may not).

2) I was talking about the SDC courses that I listed, which are all AT LEAST 1 paper or project.  I was not talking about the UMPI courses at all.

Thank you ss20ts, dfrecore ,bjcheung77 and rachel83az, you all have provide great information and a lot of food for thought. I appreciate all you taking the time to respond to my inquiries. I will be buying a 2nd monitor so my daughter can get moving with the Sophia courses!

She can knock those out before she figures out which path she wants to pursue.

Awesome insight provided by you all.

She doesn't actually need a second monitor for Sophia. Many of us on here had 1 monitor and did just fine. Sophia is open book so you can open the PDF tabs and flip through as needed. She'll find that if she reads the material that she won't need much of the content during the exams.

It really depends on the student... For me, using a laptop as a desktop replacement by itself, going through courses was slow... my productivity went up when I bumped up my screen real estate by getting a second monitor. I do that for all my laptops now, having a second monitor allows me to do so much more.
