#11
I almost forgot to mention it: a BIG 'Thank You!' to zefrench for his support (and for finding out about the webcam option), I owe him.

Hi dhecker,

I can understand how frustrated you must be, but I wanted to make a quick comment.

Please don't punish a prospective employee due to them having CCP/ICCP on their resume. (maybe you were being sarcastic, I don't know)

Here's why; if they had as much trouble as you did, and they continued through it and got the CCP, it could tell you something about their character, drive, determination, and/or their ability to finish something they start. Remember they don't have anything to do with the company other than they passed some exams that aren't exactly easy to begin with. Then when you add the fact that training materials aren't easily available in a single location, and whatever trouble they may have incurred from a lack of customer service, it may show something that can be looked at as a positive.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to be "preachy", hope it didn't come across that way.

On another note, have you taken the exam yet? How did you make out?

I don't 'punish' them for having it, it just makes me wonder why they did it. It doesn't seem like a cert that's useful for the kinds of employees I seek. I see it as something that takes a while and requires effort but doesn't mean much to me, so I think of it as a kind of 'reverse' value - the person spent time on this for no apparent reason.

I will leave it off of my resume. It's just how I feel after spending 10 years looking at resumes. For different kinds of workers, it could be much more useful but in a hardcore delivery-oriented professional services environment, not useful.

Well, something like that!

I haven't taken the exam yet, but I will in a couple of weeks.

gus Wrote:. . .I'm no stranger to programming but I've been out of practice for a long time, I did some teaching and some coding in my past, most of it in languages that are extinct nowadays (anyone remembers Forth?), very little in C (small routines).

According to Wikipedia:
An implementation of Forth by the GNU Project is actively maintained, the last release in November 2008. The 1994 standard is currently undergoing revision, provisionally titled Forth 200x.[2]

Big Grin I wouldn't write Forth off yet! And no, I'm not one of the Forth cultists-- if I were to be programming on a favorite language of the past, it'd be Apple/UCSD Pascal!

If I'm looking for a vintage language programmer, I'll be sure to watch for the ICCP cert Smile

I just got this from my Excelsior advisor:

Hi Michael,

As for proficiency exams for some of your IT core requirements, we do accept ICCP exams. They are ACE evaluated and the following exams are approved for some of the cores. In review of your remaining cores, there are 5 cores that ICCP can fulfill. Here are the exams:

ICCP exam Systems Security is approved for Overview of Computer Security

ICCP exam Data Base Administration is approved for our Database Concepts

ICCP exam Integrated Project Management is approved for our Project Management

ICCP exam Internetworking & Data Communications is approved for our Data Communications and Networking

ICCP exam C++ Language is approved for our Object Oriented Programming

ICCP - Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals

ICCP - Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals

I hope this information is helpful. Please review and if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Mary Insogna, M.A.

I just passed Systems Security scoring a 76 (70 is required to pass). I used the "webcam option" mentioned above. All the questions on these exams are made up by people working in the subject area. I found the test much harder than a CLEP or DSST (I've passed 23 of those). I did use the study material available from Bird Publications for this test. While "bird" does not have the best material, it did help me pass. There is really not many study resources available for ICCP single exams. Contact me if you have any questions, I would love to help someone pass this exam.

Hi wings,
Fist of all congratulation. I have sent you a PM. Have some questions.

I just passed the ICCP C++ exam. It took me two attempts. The first time I only scored a 67% and the second time I passed with a 73%.

I used C++ for Dummies and Learn C++ -. There are also some practice test questions available here: Introduction to C++ Programming, Introduction to C++ Programming, Sixth Edtion I also paid $50 for the "study guide" that ICCP offers for this exam. It was helpful to get a little more detail on what the exam covers!

I had a friend recommend these to me! They are not specific to this exam, but they are similar and I found them very helpful.

I would also point out that I knew the basics of Object Oriented Programming well before studying for this exam. This exam is no joke; it's made to be taken by people who work in C++. I work in C# every other day. However, I had never done anything with C++. I think I spent a couple weeks on this exam.
